In the veterinary practice Ullmann we pursue this project with a mixture of deep admiration for the willingness to serve and great medical concern. Many of you are asking us, "Can this really work?" "That is why today, without tables or complicated formulas, we would like to shed light on the scientific and medical reality behind this plan.
🐾 THE PRO: WHY THE AIR PILLOW METHOD IS THE ONLY WAY
Physically speaking, a beached whale is one of the biggest challenges in veterinary medicine. If we lifted an animal weighing 12 or 15 ton with ropes or belts, we would destroy its body. The belts would cut deep into the blubber and muscles, ribs could break and internal organs would be crushed by punctual pressure.
The airbags are the only logical solution here. They function like a giant soft mattress. Because they adapt to the shape of the walking body, they distribute the enormous weight over a very large area. This prevents external injuries and saves the skeleton when lifting. The main problem is the so called crush syndrome. Since the whale has been on the ground with all its weight for days, the lower muscle areas are no longer bleeding. These muscle cells die off and release a protein called myoglobin as well as large amounts of potassium.
The dangerous thing: As soon as the whale swims freely in the water, this dead tissue suddenly bleeds again. The toxins are flushed out strikingly throughout the circulation and land in the kidneys. These are completely overwhelmed and clogged with the huge amounts of "cell scrap". The result is acute kidney failure, which often leads to death only 24 to 48 hours after a supposedly successful rescue.
🐾 THE PROBLEM OF POWERLESSNESS AND NAVIGATION
Imagine, a person had to immediately swim a marathon after three days without sleep, without food and under massive pressure. That's exactly what we want from the whale tomorrow.
A humpback whale is actively breathing. He must have the strength to keep his head above water to catch his breath. After days of exhaustion, his energy reserves are empty. In the water, there is an influx, but the whale has to fight against the resistance of the waves. If his muscles are damaged by the beach, the real danger is that he will simply drown in the open sea because he no longer has the strength to surf.
And then the crucial question remains: Why is he stranded in the first place? Whales usually don't get stranded by chance. If there is a neurological condition, an inner ear infection or a massive loss of orientation due to noise pollution, then this condition is not cured tomorrow. A sick whale will probably not find its way back into the Atlantic even in deep water, but will lose orientation again and end up on another beach.
🐾 OUR FACIT: A HIGH-RISK EXPERIMENT
The airbag action is a technical marvel and a testament to human willingness to help. However, medically, it is a race against a biological clock that has already been very outdated. We are all hoping for the "miracle from the shore", but we must also accept the reality: if the whale does not immediately show its own strength in the water and swims steadily tomorrow, the point has been reached where one must think about a gracious salvation so that suffering does not needlessly go into the sea.
