The logistics of getting to Mackinac Island don’t have to be complicated! Because there are zero cars allowed on the island, you have to arrive by boat or plane. If you are taking the ferry, here is exactly what you need to know:

- We took the Arnold Ferry from Mackinaw City for $37 USD round trip (there are also ferry options from St. Ignace)
- You can park at the terminal for $20-$40 USD, OR park at the hotel next door for only $10 a night.
- We arrived about 30 minutes before departure and had plenty of time to drop luggage, park, grab our tickets and line up for the boat.
- You drop your bags at the dock tent, and the crew ensures they are delivered straight to your hotel room.

📸 For the best pic on the ferry, grab a seat on the top deck, in the last row on the LEFT side of the boat for the absolute best views of the Mackinac Bridge on the way over to the island!

Lake Michigan Road Trip Pt 3: Western Michigan

Sandboarding the dunes in Silver Lake, Michigan was easily one of the most fun stops along the Michigan coast!

We have never been sandboarding before so we were a bit nervous but it was pretty simple process! We went to a shop Silver Lake Sand Box - Your Ultimate Souvenir & Beach Shop! in Silver Lake, rented our boards for just $10 an hour and drove about 5 minutes over to the dunes.

Here are a few things we learned from our experience:
- From the parking lot, you walk up a set of wooden stairs to reach the dunes and then hike about 15 minutes to reach the peak to start sand boarding.
- You do need a Michigan Recreation Passport to park your car at Silver Lake State Park! An out of state daily pass is $12.
- Bring Water! It gets super hot hiking up and down the dunes every time you ride and there is nowhere to get water once you are up there.
- Since we were total beginners, the shop suggested we rent one sandboard and one sled. This gave us options just in case we wiped out too much on the board (which we definitely did).
- The entire process from renting the boards, driving to the park, riding and returning the equipment took us about 2 hours!

Lake Michigan Road Trip Pt 1: Southwest Michigan

This area of over 20 wineries tucked along the east side of Lake Michigan has to be one of our favorite places to visit from Chicago! It’s close enough to drive but far enough to feel like you’re in a completely different region (or country!)

Our fav wineries we visited include:

Dablon Vineyards for the vibes! Feels so posh and upscale in the tasting room!
Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant for knowledgeable conversations about wine, good food, and a beautiful outdoor seating area (definitely take a walk through the vineyards!)
Round Barn Winery & Estate for a big group, live music and lots of room the spread out!

World Travel Q&A Series: Part 3
How did we handle being together 24/7 while traveling full-time?

We knew we needed each other to navigate through different countries and that fighting was only going to hurt us. We got along pretty well, but we definitely had to lean on a few strategies to make it work:

1️⃣ We intentionally got our workouts in separately. Alex would track down a local gym and I would do yoga alone.

2️⃣ On the weekends, we made sure to take time to FaceTime family and friends so we didn’t feel isolated from our people.

3️⃣ Anytime we went out, we always tried to sit at the bar! It guaranteed we would at least talk to the bartender and we almost always made friends with the people sitting next to us!

4️⃣ We made a point to chat with the people at our hotels and the local staff. We ended up making some really awesome friends from all over the world this year!

We’ve been coming to this carnival in small-town Iowa for as long as I can remember, and it’s always a highlight of the summer 🫶🏼 There is literally nothing better than a Midwestern weekend celebration with family, yummy foods (like deep-fried Oreos!!!), and lots of giggles.

But before this year of traveling the world, we thought going to a small-town carnival in the Midwest was just another normal summer activity. After experiencing so many different cultures, we are finally seeing our own norms in a completely new light. Going to a small-town carnival IS a cultural experience! 😅

So to all of our international friends... which experience needs the most explaining??!

When we packed up to travel across 17 countries, we thought our biggest crisis would likely be a missed flight or a medical emergency. We definitely didn’t have getting stuck in a war zone on our bingo card 🫠

How did we handle money across 17 different countries?

The short answer: Credit cards with no foreign transaction fees and airport ATMs.

The biggest mistake we made was forgetting to exchange our cash before we crossed the border to new countries. If anyone is heading to Namibia soon, let us know!! We have a stack of Namibian dollars literally no other country will take from us! 🤦‍♀️

PSA: Teslas can sit in storage for a year and still turn on!

We were so nervous about leaving our car behind while we traveled the world full-time this past year. We had so many questions about long-term EV storage, but here is exactly what happened:

We parked it in a climate controlled storage unit with a 60% charge. It was never touched, never plugged in, and never driven. A year later, it survived and only lost about 30% of its battery!

The only maintenance we had to do after taking it out was putting a little bit of air in the tires and running the latest software update. That is literally it. It is running perfectly without a single issue.

Teslas are truly one of a kind vehicles 🤯
