We weren’t totally sure what to expect from Yala National Park, all we knew was that there are a lot of leopards.

While we did learn a lot about them, we also learned about so many other types of animals and the land itself. Being a national park that sits right up against the Indian Ocean makes this park a super unique place for the wildlife to live and flourish! Our favorite was seeing the Asian elephants for the first time and understanding the differences to the African elephants (which we’ve come very accustomed to and love!)

If you’re curious about our Yala safari trip, we put everything we know into a guide. If you comment “Leopard Safari” we’ll send it over to ya!

P.S.- We didn’t get to see a sloth bear ☹️ We searched really hard for one but they were hiding. If you’ve successfully seen one in the wild, where was it?! After several parks of not seeing one we’re getting more eager to see them!

We’ve been on A LOT of safari drives (well over 20 in the last year!), but each park and country has its own unique aspects. These are the items we brought with us on safari at Yala National Park that were absolute essentials:

🧥 A light jacket for the early morning: It gets surprisingly chilly before the sun comes up! Mine is but any light cover-up (or scarf) will do.

☀️ Sunscreen: Definitely don’t forget this! The hot Sri Lankan sun is no joke by 7:30 AM, and if you’re stuck on the side of the jeep where the sun is hitting, your arm and shoulder will get absolutely roasted. I use the oil free 30 SPF from but any mini bottle works great. Just make sure you have it!

🔭 A good pair of binoculars: This is key. The guides can’t drive off the road in Yala, so if an animal is 100 yards away, your only chance at seeing it is through your binocs! We have a pair of 12x42 that we got on Amazon and work great.

📸 A good camera with a zoom lens: This requires a bit of an investment, but it’s so worth it. We have a a6400 paired with a Sony E 70-350mm lens and although we paid about $1,000 USD for the lens, we need it because a lot of the animals are far off the path or hiding way up in the trees. The phone camera just doesn’t quite cut it out here.

🚽 A bush toilet bag: Pack a little pouch with hand sanny, a small toilet paper roll, and a grocery bag for your dirty TP. This makes peeing behind a bush SO much better!!!

We have all of these exact items listed in our Amazon list (link is in our bio!), but honestly any variation of these items will be super helpful!

We visited Yala National Park in Sri Lanka expecting to see leopards around every corner (because that’s the assumption when you hear the tagline “the highest density of leopards in the world!”) but these are wild animals after all! They spend majority of the day completely hidden away under shady bushes or in the treetops.

We booked a full-day safari and ended up with 3 separate sightings... of the exact same leopard! 😅

Even though our wild expectations of seeing dozens of leopards weren’t exactly met, the safari was still an incredible experience and shouldn’t be skipped on a trip to Sri Lanka!

We put together a guide on everything we learned from our visit to Yala National Park, in it you’ll find:

✈️ How to get to Yala National Park
🏡Which lodge we stayed at & what was included
🤑How much the leopard safari cost
📆Our exact safari schedule
💰Tipping guide
📋Packing & gear list

Comment “Leopard Safari” and we’ll send our free guide to your DMs!

The way safari guides track for animals like leopards is insane!

They are able to spot specific animal tracks (like the male leopard prints we saw), look at the direction it’s going, tell how fresh the prints are, and even tell what the animal was doing (casually walking, hunting, etc.) by the spacing of the prints!

The guides also listen for the sounds of the park. While scanning the prints, they are listening for “alarm calls” from deer, monkeys, and other animals who have specific ‘screams’ to warn the rest of the jungle when a big cat is nearby.

Using the information they have from prints, alarm calls, the time of day, and previous knowledge of the animals in the area, the guides work as detectives to find and spot the animals!

It’s incredibly impressive and the feeling of finally spotting an animal you’ve been searching for is so rewarding! 🐆🤯

Our favorites from our week in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka (aka our new fav lil beach town) 🥹🌴

☕️ Coffee: The caramel coconut milk latte at .hostel was literally life-changing (sounds like an exaggeration but it’s not, okay?!)

💻 Cafe: completely stole our hearts. We spent more time here than anywhere else. It has the best vibes for a workspace, fresh food, great music, and even better staff!

💎Activity: Jewelry making at ! We made a ring and a pair of earrings for $60 USD total. It was so much fun, way better than buying random souvenirs, and now we have pieces we made for each other.

🏖️ Beach: About a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride outside of town is Peanut Farm Beach! It’s a beautiful spot with good surfing, and you can rent daybeds for just $3 USD.

🍹 Cocktails: has a really great cocktail (and pizza!) menu. We loved grabbing a Negroni and just chilling on the beanbags.

🛍️ Shopping: Sky Handmade is easily the best shop on the main strip. Everything is handmade by a local family. I loved a pair of shorts that didn’t quite fit right, and the owner literally tailored them to my exact fit right there in the store!

Like we’re from the U.S. and technically live there (when we’re not traveling), so do we count that as a country we’ve been to?? Or does it not count?

We’d be lying if we told you we weren’t also surprised when we ran the numbers and saw just how much we spent during our month in India 😳

BUT the more we broke down the spending buckets, the more it started to make sense... We tracked every dollar spent and put it into a guide so that others can see what it costs to have a trip to India that isn’t budget backpacking (no hate towards those types of trips, this just wasn’t that).

If you are curious to find out our exact spending breakdown, hotel list, and favorite activities, comment “India Budget” and we’ll send it over to your DMs! 💬
