Onlookers watching the river levels rise. In fact, so many people have been gathering by the banks, an enterprising ice cream vendor has turned up. Water has already flooded numerous Ping-side properties.

Residents once again bracing for potential flooding following heavy rains last night, sending a new surge of water from Mae Taeng District into Chiang Mai city. Since this morning, the water level of the Ping River at station P.1 has begun to rise again, increasing rapidly at an average of 5 centimetres per hour — from 3.14 metres at 8a.m. to 3.34 metres at 1p.m., a rise of 20 centimetres in just five hours. This heightens the risk of the river overflowing its banks into the city.

It is expected that the water surge from Mae Taeng will reach point P.67 in San Sai District and peak at around 6p.m.

From there, the surge is forecast to arrive in Chiang Mai city at point P.1 this evening, reaching its highest level of about 3.90 metres around midnight. This would exceed the warning threshold of 3.70 metres, though still below the Chiang Mai Municipality’s flood barrier level of 4.20 metres. At that level, the river may overflow slightly in some areas.

Meanwhile all floodgates along the Ping River are to be opened to speed up water drainage from the city area and push it downstream toward the Bhumibol Dam in Tak Province.
