Over 70 Fatalities Reported in Mandalay's Obo Prison Due to Earthquake

7 June 2025 By Ra Wai / MPA

The Political Prisoners Network of Myanmar (PPNM) announced today (June 7) that over 70 people died in Mandalay's Obo Prison due to collapsed buildings during the major Sagaing earthquake.

Among the deceased, at least 49 were political prisoners. The PPNM stated that the military council has not released any information and has imposed a media blackout on the incident.

"We must question why the military council hasn't released information about the prison deaths, especially since they weren't caused by the military but by a natural disaster. International organizations like the ICRC, which are concerned with prisons, need to pressure the military council to allow access to assess the situation inside the prisons. If they are denied access, it should be publicly disclosed," a Monywa-based activist told MPA.

The PPNM also reported that political prisoners inside Obo Prison are isolated from information within the four walls, and their families and the public outside remain unaware of the true situation. They haven't even been able to hold memorial services for the deceased.

It is understood that the mass casualties were not only due to the strong earthquake but also because the old prison buildings were overcrowded.

The major Sagaing earthquake, which occurred on March 28, caused numerous deaths and injuries in both Sagaing and Mandalay.

Junta Airstrike Kills Students in Sagaing Region’s Tabayin Township

12 May 2025 By Ra Wai / MPA

A Myanmar military airstrike on a school in Tabayin Township, Sagaing Region, has killed multiple students and injured others, according to local resistance sources.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday, a military jet dropped two bombs on a school in Oe Htein Kwin Village, completely destroying the building while classes were in session.

“We can’t confirm the exact number of casualties yet because the entire school was hit,” a local resistance fighter told MPA. “Many children were inside at the time, and several were injured. The full death toll remains unclear.”

Teachers were also among the casualties. “So far, we’ve confirmed the death of one teacher. Others suffered severe injuries—some lost limbs,” the source added.

The number of fatalities is still being compiled as rescue efforts continue.

The attack comes despite the junta’s repeated ceasefire declarations—from April 2–22, April 23–30, and most recently from May 6–31. However, airstrikes and artillery assaults have continued unabated across multiple regions in Myanmar.

Junta Troops Kill 11, Arrest 20 in Magway’s Gangaw Township

12 May 2025 By MPA

Myanmar junta troops killed 11 local resistance members and civilians and arrested 20 others during a pre-dawn raid on Lel Ma Village in Gangaw Township, Magway Region, according to local sources.

The assault was carried out by soldiers from Infantry Battalion 50, based in Gangaw, who entered the village around 2 a.m. on Monday.

“A military column from Infantry Battalion 50 raided the village early in the morning. We’ve received reports that 11 people were killed and around 20 others arrested. They also seized 17 weapons,” a local source told MPA.

A member of the local resistance said those arrested were part of Lel Ma Village’s defense and administrative teams, which operate under the Ministry of Defense of the National Unity Government (NUG).

“The junta troops struck without warning. Our defense and administration teams had no time to respond,” the fighter explained.
MPA is continuing to verify the identities of those killed in the raid.

Military Bombs Sagaing’s Wetlet for Two Consecutive Days Despite Ceasefire, Killing 10 Including CDM Teacher

11 May 2025 By Ra Wai / MPA

The Myanmar military junta, despite its repeated ceasefire declarations, launched consecutive airstrikes in Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region, killing 10 civilians—including a teacher from the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM)—and injuring at least eight others.

According to the Wetlet Informational Network (WIN), a military jet bombed Ywar Taw Village at around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. “We saw two bombs—one appeared to be a rocket and the other a high-explosive bomb. Both hit inside the village,” said Ko Nagar Lay, WIN’s leader. “A CDM teacher was among the dead. The scene was horrifying—bodies were torn apart. We could only confirm the teacher’s identity because we recognized her. The rest were unidentifiable.”

More than 10 houses were destroyed in the attack. A representative from The Voice of Wetlet Madayar added, “The buildings were completely engulfed in flames. Most of the victims were civilians—primarily women and even a young boy.”

In the aftermath, villagers have fled Ywar Taw, with many still displaced as of Sunday.

The following morning, around 7:30 a.m., another military airstrike struck a school in Shwe Pan Kone Village, also in Wetlet Township, injuring two civilians, according to initial reports from Ko Nagar Lay.

The junta has announced three ceasefire periods—April 2–22, April 23–30, and the most recent from May 6–31—but has continued its military operations, including airstrikes and artillery attacks, across various regions in Myanmar.

Myanmar Junta Repeats Airstrikes in Nawnghkio Despite Ceasefire Extension

The Myanmar military junta has continued airstrikes in Nawnghkio Township, northern Shan State, targeting Zone 10 of the town’s market area, despite a ceasefire extension announced from May 6 to 31. The air raid destroyed three houses and a car.

This latest attack follows an artillery strike on Thayet Cho Village on Thursday that killed four civilians, including a child, and injured seven others.

“A few houses were hit, but no civilians were harmed in the market bombing,” a local resident told MPA. “The fighting is still intense, and we’re resisting as much as we can.”

Clashes remain ongoing in Taungkham village, with casualties reported on both sides, according to the same source.

The escalation comes after talks between the junta and the Palaung State Liberation Front/Ta’ang National Liberation Army (PSLF/TNLA) were held in Kunming on April 28–29, following Chinese mediation. During the talks, the junta demanded that TNLA withdraw from key towns including Nawnghkio, Kyaukme, Hsipaw, Mogoke, and Mongmit—demands that were firmly rejected.

Following TNLA's refusal, the junta intensified airstrikes across TNLA-controlled territories. “The military bombed near the Ohn Ma Thee area on Saturday. Villagers had already fled, so there were no casualties,” a local man said. “But seven of the injured from the May 8 shelling reportedly died on Saturday. The market was bombed twice, but no one was hurt.”

On May 5, the junta also carried out airstrikes near an artillery battalion in Kyaukme Township and in Kwan Hsan Lan village, Mongngawt Township.

“Airstrikes hit Nawnghkio almost daily now. Jets are constantly circling, making it hard to work,” a local shopkeeper said. “We live in fear, but we can’t stop working—we have to survive.”

With another round of China-brokered negotiations expected in August, residents in TNLA-held areas fear more territorial demands from the military, especially as the air raids persist.

Meanwhile, TNLA's allies in the Three Brotherhood Alliance—the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and Arakan Army (AA)—have extended their unilateral ceasefire until the end of May to allow humanitarian access for earthquake-affected communities, assuring that no offensive operations will be launched during this period.

Myanmar Pro-Democracy Group Urges ASEAN to Cut Ties with "Blood-Stained" Junta

10 May 2025 By Ko Paing / MPA

Defend Myanmar Democracy (DMD), a civil society group, has called on ASEAN to end its engagement with Myanmar’s military junta, accusing the bloc of legitimizing a regime responsible for ongoing violence.

In a statement issued Saturday, DMD stressed that Myanmar’s diplomatic seat in ASEAN does not belong to the junta, which it described as an illegitimate power-grabber. The group criticized ASEAN for failing to enforce its Five-Point Consensus over the past four years, despite holding more than 100 meetings with the junta—none of which, it said, have brought meaningful progress.

“Every handshake with the junta is like strengthening its killing machines,” the statement declared.

The group urged ASEAN to uphold justice by supporting those working to protect the people of Myanmar, rather than those committing atrocities against them.

An exiled political activist based in Mae Sot commented, “ASEAN and the international community know the Five-Point Consensus is ineffective, yet they cling to it as if it were a sacred text—because they have no alternative strategy.”

“Not only is ASEAN failing to act against the junta, it may even face blowback from the regime itself,” the activist added.

Ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit on Disaster Management, DMD called on ASEAN to invite only the legitimate government—the National Unity Government (NUG)—which, it said, is actively engaged in disaster response, unlike the junta.

Military Airstrikes Displace Residents from 10 Villages in Magway Region’s Kyaukhtu

10 May 2025 By Hsu Yee / MPA

The Myanmar military junta has carried out airstrikes in Kyaukhtu, a town in Magway Region’s Saw Township, forcing more than 4,000 residents from 10 villages to flee their homes.

According to the local news outlet Yaw Alin Tan, a Y-12 military aircraft dropped bombs four times on villages south of the Kyaukhtu airfield at around 6 p.m. on Friday.

“We’re not sure which villages were hit exactly, but the strikes targeted areas near the southern and northern edges of the airfield,” said Ko Aung Gyi from Yaw Alin Tan, speaking to MPA. “These areas are close to the Kyaukhtu Artillery Battalion.”

Villages affected include Myo Pauk, Chaung Ku, Yaw Town, Yint Ye, Kan Gyi, Kyan Taw, Pyin Lel, Tuang Htet, Yae Shin, and Pauk Khaung. Most of the displaced residents are now seeking shelter in Saw Town.

Due to disruptions in phone lines and communication challenges in Kyaukhtu Township, the full extent of damage to homes and civilians remains unclear.

“Some villagers near the artillery battalion had already fled earlier due to previous attacks,” Ko Aung Gyi added.
The junta also launched nighttime airstrikes on May 1 and 6. According to Yaw Alin Tan, Kyaukhtu has been targeted by eight airstrikes since April.

The attacks come despite the military’s announcement of a third unilateral ceasefire, set from May 6 to 31, with junta forces continuing air and artillery operations nationwide.

Junta Election Chief Warns of Unprecedented Conditions in Upcoming Poll

10 May 2025 By Mg Dagon / MPA

The chairman of the military junta’s Union Election Commission, U Ko Ko, has said that the conditions surrounding the regime’s proposed December election differ significantly from previous polls, and therefore require careful handling.

He made the remarks during a coordination meeting on Friday aimed at ensuring the “successful” organization of the junta’s planned election.

“The upcoming election is different from previous ones. The conditions under which it will be held and the electoral procedures involved are more complex. The system, voting period, and methods have all changed—so careful attention is needed,” U Ko Ko said.

He added that the junta plans to use an electronic voting system in place of traditional paper ballots. After examining machines used in other countries, he claimed a system suitable for Myanmar had been developed. “We’ve repeatedly tested the voting machines to ensure they are error-free, secure, and can gain public trust,” he said.

As of Friday, 27 new political parties had applied for registration under the junta’s election commission, bringing the total to 77 including 50 existing parties seeking re-registration.

However, the military-organized election has been widely rejected by the public and pro-democracy groups. A central executive member of the National League for Democracy (NLD) commented, “We are not interested and do not recognize it.”

A resident of Yangon’s Shwe Pyi Thar Township echoed this sentiment: “We already voted for the government we want. We have no interest in voting again. No matter how hard the SAC tries, we’re not participating.”

During his visit to Russia and Belarus from March 4–9, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing told Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko that the election would be held in the last week of December or the first week of January. However, U Ko Ko has publicly stated it would be held in late December.

Junta Bombs Hit Chaung-U Pagoda Compound, Killing Child and Two Men

10 May 2025 By Nway / MPA

A military junta airstrike struck a pagoda compound in Letpan Hla Village, Chaung-U Township, Sagaing Region, on Saturday, killing three people—including a young boy—and injuring two others, according to the local People’s Defense Team.

The Information and Public Relations Officer of the Chaung-U Township People's Defense Team told MPA, “When the paramotor arrived, they were just at the pagoda as usual. I heard the bomb didn’t fall on a house—it landed inside the pagoda compound.”

The victims included a child and two men from the same family, while a woman from the family was injured. “Two men and a child from one family were killed, and a woman was injured. Another man, who was not part of the family, was seriously wounded,” he said.
Details about the extent of damage to the pagoda compound are not yet available.

The airstrike came despite the junta’s repeated ceasefire announcements—from April 2 to 22, April 23 to 30, and May 6 to 13—while they continue to carry out airstrikes and artillery attacks across the country.

Three Brotherhood Alliance Extends Unilateral Ceasefire by One Month

2 May 2025 By MPA

The Three Brotherhood Alliance has announced a one-month extension of its unilateral ceasefire, citing the need to support ongoing earthquake recovery efforts.

In a statement released on Thursday, the alliance said the ceasefire will now remain in effect from May 1 to 31 to allow for the clearance of damaged buildings and the continuation of humanitarian aid operations in affected areas.

The alliance reaffirmed that it will not launch offensive operations against the military junta during the extended period, except in cases of self-defense.

The group had previously declared a unilateral ceasefire from April 1 to 30.

Ceasefire Talks Collapse as Junta Demands TNLA Retreat to Namhsan and Manton

2 May 2025 By MPA

Ceasefire negotiations between the Palaung State Liberation Front/Ta’ang National Liberation Army (PSLF/TNLA) and the Myanmar military junta ended in deadlock after the junta demanded TNLA forces withdraw from several key areas, according to a statement released by the TNLA.

The talks, held in Kunming, China, on Monday and Tuesday, were mediated by the Chinese government. The PSLF/TNLA delegation was led by Vice-Chairman Major General Tar Jote Jar, while the junta’s team was headed by Deputy Commander-in-Chief Soe Win.

During the discussions, junta officials insisted that TNLA troops pull back from Nawnghkio, Kyaukme, Hsipaw, Mogok, and Momeik to the towns of Namhsan and Manton. The PSLF delegation rejected the demand, resulting in an impasse. Both sides agreed only to reconvene in August for further talks.

The TNLA statement noted that Chinese envoy Tian Shiqin facilitated the dialogue, which also covered a possible halt to military operations, including airstrikes, artillery shelling, drone attacks, and ground offensives, as well as the reopening of border trade routes between China and Myanmar.

The breakdown in talks follows a similar case in April, when the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) withdrew from Lashio after negotiations brokered by China.
