Japanese Call Center Scam Boss Arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport
THAILAND — Authorities have arrested a 31-year-old Japanese national suspected of leading a transnational call center scam network linked to organized crime groups. The suspect was detained at Suvarnabhumi Airport on June 8, 2026, while allegedly attempting to leave the country.
The operation was carried out by Thailand’s Anti-Online Scam Center (ACSC), the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), and Immigration Police. Investigators say the suspect is connected to more than 40 fraud cases targeting Japanese victims, causing losses estimated at over 1 billion yen (more than 200 million baht).
According to authorities, the network allegedly operated from Cambodia and used automated calls impersonating telecommunications companies before transferring victims to scammers posing as police officers and prosecutors. Victims were reportedly threatened and persuaded to transfer money under the false claim of verifying their innocence in criminal investigations.
Officials also found evidence that the group used fake overseas job advertisements to recruit Japanese nationals into call center scam operations. The suspect is currently in immigration custody and is expected to face deportation proceedings for further legal action in Japan.

Two Suspected Drug Traffickers Killed in Border Clash, Large Drug Haul Seized in Chiang Mai
CHIANG MAI — Thai security forces intercepted a drug trafficking operation near the Thai-Myanmar border in Fang District, Chiang Mai, early on June 8, 2026. A firefight lasting approximately five minutes resulted in the deaths of two suspected traffickers, while all officers involved escaped unharmed.
The operation was carried out by troops from the 4th Cavalry Company and Ranger Company 3207 under the Pha Muang Task Force. Authorities had received intelligence reports about a planned cross-border drug shipment and were conducting surveillance along a natural route in Mon Pin Subdistrict when they encountered a group of three to four suspects carrying backpacks.
According to officials, the suspects opened fire when officers attempted to stop and search them, leading to an exchange of gunfire. After securing the area, authorities recovered approximately 200,000 methamphetamine pills, 1 kilogram of crystal methamphetamine (ice), and 3.2 kilograms of raw o***m.
Military officials believe the narcotics were smuggled from storage locations across the border in Myanmar before being transported through Fang District for distribution inside Thailand. The seized drugs have been handed over to investigators at Fang Police Station, while authorities continue efforts to identify and arrest other members of the trafficking network.

Police Bust Chinese Scam Operation in Luxury Housing Estate in Chiang Mai, 10 Arrested
CHIANG MAI — Police Region 5 investigators and the PCT 5 cybercrime unit raided a luxury house in Saraphi District, Chiang Mai, on June 8, 2026, uncovering an alleged Chinese scam operation. Ten Chinese nationals were arrested during the operation.
Officers seized more than 80 electronic devices, including laptop computers, mobile phones, and other equipment believed to have been used in online fraud activities. The house, located in Nong Phueng Subdistrict, was reportedly being used as a base for targeting victims overseas.
According to preliminary investigations, some suspects entered Thailand on tourist visas and rented the property for approximately 80,000 baht per month. They allegedly worked in scam operations targeting Chinese citizens and received payments through cryptocurrency transactions.
Police said the group allegedly impersonated insurance and delivery companies to trick victims into installing software that allowed access to personal information, leading to financial fraud. Authorities are continuing to investigate possible links to other suspects and organizers both in Thailand and abroad.

CMU Researchers Discover New Plant Species “Rujisirin,” Expanding Thailand’s Biodiversity Knowledge
Researchers from Chiang Mai University have discovered a new plant species previously unknown to science, named “Rujisirin” (Pseuduvaria sirindhorniana), a rare tree found in the tropical rainforests of Narathiwat Province. The species belongs to the custard apple family (Annonaceae) and was officially recognized as a new species through scientific research.
The Thai name “Rujisirin” was graciously bestowed by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, while the scientific name honors her long-standing support for botanical research, biodiversity studies, and plant conservation in Thailand. The discovery was led by Associate Professor Dr. Thanawat Chaowasku and a team of researchers and former students from Chiang Mai University.
Rujisirin is a small tree growing approximately 3–4 meters tall. Its striking flowers feature six petals arranged in two layers, with creamy white outer petals and purple-red inner petals accented with cream markings. The flowers form a dome-like structure that provides access for pollinating insects, making the species particularly distinctive.
The findings were published in the international scientific journal Blumea on May 26, 2026. Researchers warn that the species is currently considered rare, with known populations limited to a few forest areas in Narathiwat. As its habitat faces pressure from agricultural expansion, the team is calling for conservation efforts and the use of plant tissue culture technology to help protect the species from extinction.
