Chiang Mai Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Thailand–China Relations, Reaffirming Strong Friendship and Future Cooperation
Chiang Mai – July 1, 2025
The Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Chiang Mai hosted a grand celebration marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China at the Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai. The event was held under the theme “Thailand and China: Brothers Beyond Borders” to highlight the deep-rooted friendship and promote continued cooperation between the two nations in the coming decade.
The evening celebration was attended by Mr. Nirat Phongsitthithaworn, Governor of Chiang Mai Province, along with provincial executives, members of the Red Cross, and representatives from both public and private sectors. They warmly welcomed Mr. Chen Haiping, Consul-General of the People's Republic of China in Chiang Mai, and the Chinese diplomatic delegation.
Reflecting on Five Decades of Friendship:
On this occasion, the Chiang Mai Governor remarked that the relationship between Thailand and China extends far beyond diplomacy. It is deeply connected through shared culture, history, and the close bond between the peoples of both nations. Over the past 50 years, Thai–Chinese cooperation has flourished steadily across various sectors, including economy, education, tourism, and cultural exchange.
Chiang Mai: A Bridge of Collaboration
As the hub of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai has established sister-city relationships with nine Chinese cities: Shanghai, Qingdao, Chongqing, Xishuangbanna, Chengdu, Meishan, Hainan, Shaoyang, and Guangzhou. These partnerships have generated significant benefits in areas such as economy, education, and innovation.
Shaping the Future Together in a New Decade:
The event also featured exchanges of vision from both sides, expressing a mutual commitment to deepening collaboration and ensuring a stable and sustainable future for both Thailand and China.

🇨🇳🤝🇹🇭 Shoulder to Shoulder for 50 Years: Stepping into a Shared Future
Marking the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Thailand
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand, commemorated as the "Golden Year of China–Thailand Friendship." Over the past half-century, the two countries have stood side by side through challenges and development, forging a strong and enduring bond. As we embark on a new journey, new hopes and aspirations arise. As President Xi Jinping stated:
“Standing at a new historical starting point in China–Thailand relations, both sides should carry forward the fine traditions of the past, walk hand in hand into the future, and jointly build a deeper and more stable China–Thailand community with a shared future, bringing happiness to the people of both countries and making greater contributions to the region and the world.”
China and Thailand are good neighbors with shared visions. Under the leadership of both countries over the past 50 years, our nations have upheld the principles of mutual respect, equality, and unwavering support for each other’s sovereignty, security, and development interests. This has made the China–Thailand relationship a model of peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation between countries with different social systems.
During President Xi Jinping’s official visit to Thailand in 2022, both leaders jointly declared the creation of a more stable, prosperous, and sustainable China–Thailand community with a shared future, elevating the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations into a new high-quality era.
China and Thailand are not only true friends but also reliable partners. In times of hardship, such as during the Asian financial crisis, the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Wenchuan earthquake, and the COVID-19 pandemic, both nations supported each other with deep solidarity and empathy. This highlights the core of the shared future community—shared joys and sorrows, and unwavering unity.
In tangible terms, bilateral cooperation has grown from nothing to remarkable diversity. Since the establishment of relations, bilateral trade has increased more than 5,000 times. China has been Thailand’s largest trading partner for 12 consecutive years, the top market for Thai agricultural exports, the largest foreign investor, and the main source of international tourists. Thailand is also a key partner in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
New progress has been achieved in economic, trade, investment, and infrastructure cooperation, with expanding collaboration in emerging sectors like digital economy, new energy vehicles (NEVs), and green development. Strategic connectivity between the two nations continues to deepen.
China and Thailand enjoy profound mutual understanding. As President Xi noted, China–Thailand friendship has endured for thousands of years. The saying “China and Thailand are not strangers, but siblings” remains timeless. Over the years, cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges have flourished.
Last year, the relic of the Buddha’s tooth (Phra Buddha Relic) from Lingguang Temple in Beijing was enshrined in Thailand, attracting over 3 million Thai devotees. The Chinese film “Lost in the Stars” (Lan Ma) depicting Thai-Chinese family ties was a box office hit in China. Meanwhile, Chinese mascot “Labubu” became a favorite among Thai fans. These examples reflect the growing cultural and emotional bonds, especially among youth.
Looking Ahead:
China will always stand firmly alongside Thailand, serving as a trusted friend and development partner into the future.
Both sides should continue to implement the strategic consensus of their leaders, strengthen political trust, and promote a stable China–Thailand shared future community.
Deepen cooperation on flagship projects like the China–Thailand railway, facilitate trade and investment, and expand into new sectors such as digital economy and NEVs.
Promote people-to-people ties, especially among youth, and organize colorful, heartfelt celebrations for the 50th anniversary to ensure lasting friendship for generations.
Face global challenges together through close coordination in international affairs, defending multilateralism and international law, and promoting inclusive globalization.
Together for the Next 50 Years:
Strengthening and maintaining the enduring bond of friendship and cooperation between China and Thailand.

🎉🍄CMU Science Team Discovers a New Edible Mushroom Species – Lentinus saisamorniae – at CMU Campus
A research team from Chiang Mai University (CMU) has discovered a new species of edible white rot fungus, found near the Sala Tham Pavilion on the university campus. This new species, named Lentinus saisamorniae, belongs to the genus Lentinus and was identified through morphological and molecular analysis.
Led by Dr. Nakarin Suwannarach and Dr. Jaturong Kumla, senior researchers at the Center of Excellence in Microbial Diversity and Sustainable Utilization, Faculty of Science, along with graduate student Mr. Atsadawut Kaewnanta from the Department of Biology, the team conducted extensive fieldwork to document fungal biodiversity on CMU grounds.
From 2019 to 2024, they systematically collected and analyzed large fungi to create a database of fungal diversity and assess carbon cycle contributions in local ecosystems. The newly discovered fungus was found growing on grasslands, nourished by decomposing tree roots underground.
The species was classified using modern taxonomic principles, combining macro- and micro-morphological traits with multigene molecular analysis, including:
- ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) for genus identification
- LSU (Large Subunit rDNA) and rpb2 (RNA polymerase II second largest subunit) for species-level identification
These findings were confirmed using phylogenetic tree analyses, resulting in the classification of a novel species: Lentinus saisamorniae.
The team successfully cultivated pure mycelium and induced fruiting under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Notably, Lentinus species are known to be edible, and this new species has high heat tolerance, thriving in temperatures up to 37°C.
The species was named saisamorniae in honor of Professor Emeritus Dr. Saisamorn Lumyong, a leading figure in Thai mycology with over 35 years of contributions, on the occasion of her 75th birthday. The proposed common name is “Hed Khon Khao Saisamorn” (เห็ดขอนขาวสายสมร).
Scientific and Societal Impact
- Adds to Thailand’s national fungal biodiversity database
- Positions Northern Thailand as a hotspot for fungal discovery
- Potential economic crop for sustainable protein sourcing
- Aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2, 3, 4)
- Encourages future development of climate-resilient edible mushrooms

Grand and Groundbreaking! The “Thai National Radio Astronomy Observatory” Now Open at Huai Hong Khrai Development Study Center, Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai
The Thai National Radio Astronomy Observatory (TNRO), Thailand’s central hub for radio astronomy research and operated by the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), is located within the Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Center in Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai, covering an area of 50 rai (approximately 20 acres) at an elevation of 390 meters above sea level.
Currently, the observatory is home to two major radio telescopes:
The 40-meter National Radio Telescope, the largest radio telescope in Southeast Asia.
The 13-meter VGOS (Very Long Baseline Interferometry Global Observing System) radio telescope.
The observatory began operations under the “Radio Astronomy and Geodesy Network Development Project”, carried out between 2017–2021, to advance Thailand’s observational capabilities in astronomy. The project aims to promote the application of astronomy, enhance fundamental knowledge in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and develop high-level engineering technologies and human resources. It also supports growth in advanced industries, such as communication technologies, software engineering, and digital devices.
NARIT has plans to install a total of three 13-meter VGOS radio telescopes across Thailand:
At TNRO, located within the Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Center, Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai, situated on the Eurasian Plate (construction completed and officially opened on May 16, 2025).
At Walailak University, Tha Sala Subdistrict, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province (under construction).
At the Songkhla Princess Sirindhorn Astropark, Khao Rup Chang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Songkhla Province, situated on the Sunda Plate (under construction).
Sites 1 and 2 have received structural and equipment support from the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO), China, including the 13-meter antenna structures and signal receivers operating in the 2–14 GHz frequency range.
The third site is fully developed by NARIT, based on the design of the Yebes Observatory in Spain. This includes independently designing and developing the signal reception equipment.
Once all three sites are operational, they will enable the study of tectonic plate movement in Thailand, providing vital data for predicting crustal shifts. Additionally, the observatories will help analyze variables related to Earth’s axial orientation and rotational velocity, offering crucial information for earthquake forecasting and contributing significantly to the fields of science, engineering, geology, and applied geophysics.
