🔶 The year 2025 marks 3️⃣0️⃣years since the landmark Beijing Declaration and its Platform for Action was adopted in 1995. Despite rising anti-rights and anti-gender pushes, some progress on these bold promises gives hope and strength, to strive for achieving SDG5 fully by 2030 or earlier.

🌀 While health, gender and other sustainable development goals are reeling under severe funding cuts, governments of richer nations are increasing defence budgets. More shocking is that same governments who are raising spending on militarisation, are the ones committing to ‘peace’ at a global meet on financing for development and refusing on debt cancellation for the Global South nations. Anti-rights movement against gender equality and human rights is also on an alarming rise.

The Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW)

🟣 AIDS response faces ruin, says UNAIDS Asia Pacific and UNAIDS Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Director Eamonn Murphy. He shared the powerful Buddhist tale of Quail and the Net, and said: "We are all the quails – from advocates to academics, countries to communities, doctors to development partners - we worked together to lift the net of the disease that once threatened to devastate us. We even came up with a plan to cast it off for good. Some of us have grown tired, others are doing part of the work but not all they should – many are not pulling their weight – and now we risk being trapped by a disease we should be condemning to history."

More insights from Cedriann Martin, UNAIDS Communications Advisor and Dr Jakkrapatara Boonruang, Research Physician at IHRI - Institute of HIV Research and Innovation and Mark Wainberg Fellowship Awardee

They were speaking at a session on regional data of UNAIDS Global AIDS Update 2025 and around 13th IAS - International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science (CNS is an official media partner of IAS 2025)

✨ “If we do a reality check, in the current times, we are in a dysfunctional international financing architecture – with countries in the Global South facing the brunt. We are increasingly facing challenges to mobilise resources for our own development. Because most of the countries in the Global South are in the cycles of perennial debt – which they have to keep servicing to international financial institutions. This results into austerity measures which include countries cutting down on public services, access to health services, education services, social protection services, among others,” said Sai Jyothirmai Racherla, Deputy Executive Director, The Asian-Pacific Resource & Research Centre for Women (ARROW)

“While it impacts the general population, marginalised communities, and poor people, the impact on women and girls in all their diversity across the strata is much higher. Data tells us that developing countries are seeing a record high debt servicing costs in 2023. This is straining low- and middle-income economies. This is compounded by a US$ 4 trillion annual investment gap for SDG achievement in developing countries,” she added.
