Religious narratives indicate that Iranians played a prominent role from ancient times in the formation and spread of Christianity. The presence of three Persian sages in the story of the birth of Jesus Christ is a clear example of this connection. By observing a heavenly sign, they traveled from the East to Bethlehem and were among the first to honor his birth.
In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 2, we read:
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying:
“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” And entering the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their own country by another way.
