“กูเป็นเจ้าเหนือหัวแท้ๆ” เรื่องเล่า "ในหลวงร.5" เมื่อ ทรงถูกพนักงานเก็บเงินไล่ลงจากรถราง
เมื่อครั้งในหลวงร.5 ทรงถูกพนักงานไล่ลงจากรถราง เพราะไม่มีเงินจ่าย มีเรื่องเล่ากันว่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ล้นเกล้ารัชกาลที่ 5 ซึ่งโดยปกติพระองค์ มักจะเสด็จออกตรวจตราดูแลทุกข์สุขของไพร่ฟ้าข้าแผ่นดินของพระองค์อยู่เสมอๆ
โดยทรงฉลองพระองค์อย่างประชาชนคนธรรมดาทั่วไป เสด็จปะปนไปกับประชาชนมิได้ขาด และมักเสด็จไปโดยปราศจากผู้ติดตาม เป็นที่ทราบกันดีว่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 พระองค์ทรงโปรดในการเสด็จประพาส แบบสามัญชนธรรมดา
บางครั้งก็ทรงฉลองพระองค์แบบชาวบ้านธรรมดา และไม่มีผู้ติดตาม
วันหนึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวพระองค์นั้น ได้เสด็จขึ้นประทับรถรางของนายจอห์น ลอฟตัส ที่หลักเมืองอันเป็นต้นทาง เผอิญทรงลืมเอาเงินพกติดตัวไปด้วย เมื่อรถเคลื่อนที่ออก คนเก็บเงินถามว่าจะไปลงที่ไหน? พระองค์ตรัสว่า "ถนนตก" คนเก็บเงินจึงบอกไปว่า "ถนนตกต้องเสียเงินสลึงหนึ่ง"
พระองค์ตรัสว่า "ไม่มี รีบออกมาจากบ้าน ลืมเอามา ฉันมีธุระจริงๆ พรุ่งนี้จะเอามาให้ ขอให้ฉันไปด้วยนะ" คนเก็บเงินบอกว่า "ไม่ได้หรอก ระเบียบเขามีอย่างนั้น ขึ้นรถแล้วก็ต้องเสียเงินซี"
พระองค์ตรัสว่า "เถอะน่า เว้นฉันไว้สักคนคงไม่เป็นไร ไม่มีใครรู้หรอก"
กระเป๋ารถตอบว่า "ไม่ได้หรอก ฉันต้องทำตามหน้าที่ อย่าหาว่าใจร้ายใจดำเลยพ่อคุณ ให้พ่อไปด้วยไม่ได้หรอก มันผิดระเบียบ" พระองค์ตรัสว่า "ก็ฉันจะไปนี่นา บอกว่าพรุ่งนี้จะเอามาให้ เมื่อไม่เชื่อก็ตามใจ แต่ฉันต้องไปถนนตกให้ได้"
ฝ่ายคนเก็บเงินก็ไม่ยอมท่าเดียว เถียงกันไปมา เผอิญคุณยายคนหนึ่งที่นั่งมาในรถรางคันเดียวกัน เห็นเถียงกันไปมาไม่หยุด จึงยื่นเงินสลึงหนึ่งให้ "เอ้า! ฉันให้ค่ารถแทนก็แล้วกัน" คนเก็บเงินก็รับเอาไป เรื่องราวควรจะจบลงแค่นี้ แต่พอรถรางวิ่งไปจนเกือบถึงถนนตก รถม้าพระที่นั่งก็วิ่งตามไปทัน ทุกคนบนรถรางรวมทั้งคนเก็บเงินหันไปดู มีคนตะโกนว่า "ในหลวงเสด็จ!!"
ต่างคอยจ้องดูในหลวงกัน รถรางคันนั้นก็หยุด เพื่อให้รถพระที่นั่งผ่านไปก่อน แต่รถพระที่นั่งไม่เลยไป กลับมาหยุดเทียบรถรางพอดี ในหลวงซึ่งประทับมาในรถราง ก็เสด็จขึ้นประทับบนรถพระที่นั่ง แล้วก็บ่ายหน้ากลับทันที
ตอนนี้คนเก็บเงินรถราง ตาเหลือก ตกตะลึง เมื่อรู้ว่าผู้ที่ตนทะเลาะเรื่องค่าโดยสาร และไล่ให้ลงเมื่อกี้ คือ "ในหลวง" ถึงกับมือเท้าอ่อน เหงื่อโทรมกาย คิดไปคิดมาเลยร้องไห้โฮ เพราะเจ็บใจตัวเองที่มีตาหามีแววไม่ เล่นกับใครไม่เล่นไปเล่นกับเจ้าชีวิต คราวนี้เห็นทีหัวขาดแน่นอน นั่งร้องไห้สะอึกสะอื้นเป็นที่น่าสงสาร
รุ่งขึ้น ตำรวจมาสืบหาตัวคนเก็บเงินรถรางแล้วจับกุมตัว คนเก็บเงินรถรางหน้าซีดเหมือนคนตาย ลาลูกเมียและเพื่อนฝูงเป็นการใหญ่ นึกอยู่ในใจว่าโทษของตนต้องถูกตัดหัวสถานเดียวแน่นอน ตำรวจพาตัวคนเก็บเงินรถราง เข้าเฝ้าถึงท้องพระโรง ถึงกับเป็นลมแล้วเป็นลมอีกเลยทีเดียว
ตำรวจต้องช่วยพยุงเข้าไป พอเข้าไปถึงพระที่นั่ง คนเก็บเงินรถรางถวายบังคมท่าทางเงอะงะ วิงวอนขอพระราชทานชีวิตเอาไว้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ทรงทอดพระเนตรเห็นอาการของคนเก็บเงินแล้ว ก็ให้ทรงนึกขำ แต่ก็ทรงแสร้งทำพระพักตร์บึ้งตึง มีพระราชดำรัสตวาด และด่าว่าคนเก็บเงินรถราง ตรัสว่า "โทษถึงประหาร กูเป็นเจ้าเหนือหัวแท้ๆ ยังทำกับกูได้ถึงเพียงนี้ จะเก็บเงิน กูก็จะให้ แต่เผอิญกูลืมเอาไป ผัดก่อนก็ไม่ได้ คนแบบนี้อยู่ไปก็รกแผ่นดินของกู"
แล้วตรัสเรียกมหาดเล็กให้หยิบถุงถุงหนึ่งมาถวาย ต่อจากนั้นพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ก็ตรัสเรียกคนเก็บเงินรถรางเข้าไปใกล้ๆ ทรงยื่นถุงให้ แล้วตรัสว่า "เอ้า! เอาไป ถ้าเมืองไทย มีคนทำงานตามหน้าที่อย่างนี้มากๆ บ้านเมืองก็เจริญ" เมื่อคนเก็บเงินรถรางรับถุงนั้นออกมาแล้ว ก็มีรับสั่งให้นำตัวออกไป
พอพ้นวังตำรวจบอกว่า กลับบ้านได้ คนเก็บเงินรถรางประหลาดใจ เอ๊ะ เรื่องมันยังไงกันนี่ พอตำรวจจากไปแล้ว จึงนึกถึงถุงที่ได้รับพระราชทานมาแต่พระหัตถ์ในหลวงขึ้นมาได้ เปิดปากถุงออกดูเห็นเป็นเงิน จึงเทออกมานับ ปรากฏว่ามีทั้งหมดชั่งหนึ่งพอดี คนเก็บเงินรถรางยิ้มออกมาได้ ทรุดตัวลงนั่งกลางถนนนั่นเอง หันหน้าไปทางที่ประทับของในหลวง ถวายบังคมลา แล้วเดินตัวลอยยิ้มแป้นกลับบ้านทันที

His Majesty said, "Come on. It's okay to leave me alone. No one will know."
The conductor replied, "No, I have to do my job. Don't think I'm heartless, my friend. You can't let me go with you. It's against the rules."
His Majesty said, "I'm going. I said I'll bring it tomorrow. If you don't believe me, that's fine. But I have to go to Thanon Tok."
The conductor refused to give in. They argued back and forth. It happened that a grandmother who was also in the same tram saw them arguing non-stop. She handed him one satang. "Here! I'll give you the fare instead." The conductor took it. The story should have ended here. But when the tram almost reached Thanon Tok, the royal horse-drawn carriage caught up with it. Everyone on the tram, including the conductor, turned to look. Someone shouted, "The King has arrived!!"
They all stared at the King. The tram stopped to let the royal carriage pass first. But the royal carriage did not go further, it came back and stopped at the tram just in time. The King who was in the tram got on the carriage and immediately turned to leave.
At this moment, the tram conductor’s eyes widened, shocked when he realized that the person he had argued with about the fare and chased off earlier was “the King”. His hands and feet were weak, and his body was covered in sweat. Thinking about it, he started to cry loudly because he was angry with himself for having no eyes, and playing with anyone but his own life. This time, he would definitely be decapitated. He sat there crying and sobbing, pitiful.
The next day, the police came to investigate the tram conductor and arrested him. The tram conductor’s face was as pale as a dead person. He said goodbye to his wife, children, and friends. He thought to himself that his punishment would definitely be beheading. The police took the tram conductor to the audience hall. He fainted again and again.
The police had to help him in. When they reached the throne room, the tram conductor bowed awkwardly and begged for his life. His Majesty the King saw the conductor’s condition and thought it was funny. But he pretended to be sullen, and scolded the tram conductor, saying, "The penalty is death. I am the lord, and you can do this to me. If you want to collect the money, I will give it to you, but I forgot to take it. You can't wait. People like this are just a burden to my country." Then he called a page to bring a bag. After that, His Majesty the King called the tram conductor closer, handed him the bag, and said, "Here! Take it. If Thailand has many people who do their jobs like this, the country will prosper." When the tram conductor received the bag, he ordered him to be taken away. When he left the palace, the police said he could go home. The tram conductor was surprised. What happened? After the police left, he remembered the bag that he had received from His Majesty's hands. He opened the bag and saw money. He poured it out to count. It turned out that there was exactly one chang. The tram conductor smiled and collapsed in the middle of the road. Turn to face the King's residence, bid farewell, and walk home with a smile on your face.
