HIGHWAY 54, REVISITED IN GALAXY MANILA MARATHON

EDSA will be at centerstage for the Galaxy Manila Marathon 2026 as the country’s main highway becomes the main platform for what many expect to be a defining moment for Philippine road racing and sports tourism.

RUNRIO in partnership with SM Supermalls have unveiled the grand plan for the event slated on June 12 and 13 which will see the runners traverse the major thoroughfare from SM Mall of Asia to SM North EDSA.

"This year's Galaxy Manila Marathon brings us a great source of pride given that this race won't just coincide with the Independence Day but also happens in EDSA," said RUNRIO president and CEO Rio de la Cruz.

It's the cornerstone of this partnership which unites corporate and sports leaders together with government officials all with the goal of a fruitful collaboration that pushes for more local and international runners and showcasing the country's cities as prime venues for world-class racing events.

With EDSA being turned into a race course of its own, the organizers aim to offer a uniquely urban marathon experience while highlighting Metro Manila’s central corridor as a stage for international sporting events.

“This is more than just a race—it’s an opportunity to showcase the Philippines to the world through sports,” said de la Cruz. “We want to bring in runners from across the globe and let them experience our roads, our culture, and our communities.”

Beyond Manila, the partnership includes a series of races across key regional destinations, reinforcing the country’s sports tourism drive. These include the Singlife Iloilo Marathon (April 12), Singlife Cebu International Marathon (July 12), Singlife Davao Marathon (August 15), Singlife One Clark International Marathon (September 20), and Singlife Cagayan de Oro Marathon (December 13).

This endeavor is also aligned with SM Supermalls' efforts to create accessible, community-centered venues that promote both wellness and tourism.

“By hosting races across our locations nationwide, we are helping bring people together while also supporting local economies through sports-driven travel,” said SM Supermalls president Steven Tan.

The marathon series is backed by Samsung Philippines as title sponsor of the Manila race, with technology expected to enhance the overall runner experience, with the Department of Tourism (DOT), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) all providing support and ASICS, Gatorade, and Singlife Philippines all bolstering the series.

STORY #1

THE National Academy for Sports is eyeing to do the same for promising young Filipino athletes what the Rafael Nadal Sports Academy did for rising tennis sensation Alex Eala.

Newly-appointed NAS executive director Francis Carlos ‘Kiko’ Diaz stressed this point on Tuesday, saying he underscored the idea of thinking globally at this time when he talked to the different program heads of the government-run academy upon assuming office last week.

“Alex Eala was an example of an athlete who was groomed and taught by a sports academy – the Rafael Nadal Academy with an academic program na naka-imbed dun sa program niya,” said Diaz, appearing in the first session for 2026 of the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the PSC media room.

“And kita naman natin si Alex Eala kung gaano kalaki yung kanyang tinatamasa at ini-enjoy na success sa ngayon.”

A former Dean at the University of the Philippines College of Human Kinetics, Diaz said the NAS is stepping towards that same direction as the Nadal Academy, founded by former no. 1 and retired Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal in 2016.

“Ganyan na rin ang ginagawa natin sa NAS actually. So it can be likened to that,” Diaz added in the same public sports program presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, and the country’s only 24/7 app ArenaPlus.

“We’re looking at it na may challenges at hinaharap natin ito. And we're transforming all of these into opportunities, and we’re not lacking in seeking out partners to be able to deliver all of these funding to our student-athletes.”

Established in 2020 through Republic Act. No. 11470, the NAS has its main campus set up at the New Clark City Sports Complex in Capas, Tarlac where it currently housed 237 student-athletes.

Akin to the Philippine Science High School and the Philippine High School for the Arts in Makiling, Laguna, Diaz said the academy has a two-fold responsibility.

“To provide quality and holistic secondary education to all student-athletes enrolled, and secondly, ito yung special niche nung mga naka-enroll doon. Sila ay dini-develop ng academy to become future national athletes ng ating bansa na hopefully, ay magre-representa sa atin from the sub-regional meets like the Southeast Asian Games, the regional like the Asian Games, all the way to the Olympics,” said the NAS executive director.

At the moment, the academy is focused on seven established sports, according to Diaz, who took over the post held previously by professor Josephine Joy Reyes.

“These are athletics, aquatics, taekwondo, badminton, table tennis, judo, and gymnastics,” said Diaz, pointing out that all of these sports are medal-rich Olympic events.

THE Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) returns as the official medical partner of the MPTC Tour of Luzon which returns with a bigger and richer 2026 edition from April 29 to May 13.

CSMC will also actively involve its hospital partners along the Tour of Luzon route.
“Cycling at this level tests the limits of the human body,” Say said. “Risks come with high-speed competition and medical preparedness becomes a crucial part of the race that is why Cardinal Santos Medical Center, together with our partner hospitals across Luzon, will have medical teams ready along the route.”
The Tour of Luzon—again with the Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. as title sponsor—returns this summer this time bigger that last year’s eight-stage revival and with a wider scope from CaSeBo in Calatatagan, Tagaytay City, New Clark City and Clark, Palayan City, Bayombong, Santiago City, Tuguegarao, Pagudpud, Paoay, Laoag City, San Juan and Agoo in La Union, Mangatarem and Lingayen in Pangasinan and Baguio City.
Again finishing atop Baguio City at Scout Hill in Camp John Hay, the 2026 Tour of Luzon-A Heritage in Motion—covers the Southern Tagalog, Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, Ilocos and Cordillera Autonomous Regions.
At least 20 teams—including five foreign squads—of seven riders each are seeing action in the race that covers 1,800 kilometers marked by several King of the Mountain Climbs and challenging sprints.

Vermosa Victory Games, to enforce grassroots sports development

WITH the vision of helping promote Philippine sports, the spacious and well-developed Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub will stage the inaugural Vermosa Victory Games on March 21 and 22 in Imus, Cavite.
The event’s organizers led by XMPLR Sports under its founder and CEO Robbie de Vera have lined up age-group competitions in swimming, football and cheerleading at the 8-hectare property that boasts a nine-lane track oval, aquatics center, and football field.
The two-day event scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. is open to all schools and clubs with athletes as young as 5-6 years old.
“The Vermosa Sports Hub has been around for eight years and we want our facility to be more of a program event for grassroots sports. This is just the start and we can do it again,” said Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub general manager Lani Tan in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the PSC media room.
“We have plans to expand not just by hosting events but how we can contribute to the sports landscape in the country,” added Tan, who was joined at the forum by XMPLR Sports project manager Ronyth Cada, cheerleading tournament director Javier Beren and De Vera, former head of the highly-successful Milo Sports Program.
“We want to bring Vermosa’s vision to life and that is to promote sports and a vibrant lifestyle around the estate,” said De Vera during the public sports program presented by San Miguel Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.
“This event aims to provide more opportunities for young athletes,” said Cada, adding that up for grabs aside from premium trophies and medals are the bragging rights of being the first winners of the Vermosa Victory Games.
Registration for what Cada described as a “dynamic grassroots tournament” is still open with a limited number of slots still available. Organizers expect as many as 1,000 participants across the three events.
For the cheerleading competition, Beren said organizers have pegged the number to five teams per category.
