In mid-April, Illuzion hosted artists who felt quite unusual for the venue. Gorgon City are far from the club’s typical format and hardly a magnet for tourists, especially those arriving as the season approaches its end. And this immediately raises a rather deep question: does the name on the flyer even matter once a club has already built such a massive reputation? If endless streams of tourists are already willing to pay 500 baht for entry on a Wednesday night (and judging by their facial expressions, these were definitely not so-called “bass faces”), should the economic strategy focus on introducing interesting artists to the audience, or is it enough to simply open the doors and place some DJ on stage? Among the events our team studies, we constantly encounter names that are completely indistinguishable from countless others, yet are aggressively presented by promoters as something worthy of attention. Where should the line be drawn between educating the audience and simply profiting from them?

Leaving that question unanswered, let’s move on to the event itself. The staff appeared unprepared — employees at the entrance gave incorrect timetable information, or became victims of miscommunication within the organization. The artists themselves were openly phoning it in, lazily pretending to work behind the decks, making meaningless adjustments on the mixer just to keep their hands occupied. Of course, the musical material matched the crowd as well — nothing extraordinary, extremely mainstream, and lacking any spark. This feels disappointing compared to the music Gorgon City release on streaming platforms.

Still, credit should be given to the Illuzion team for taking the risk. This was far from a routine event for Phuket’s biggest club, and hopefully not the last of its kind.
