🇹🇭 “Sawasdee Kha” or “Sawasdee Khrap” Is More Than Just “Hello.” 🇹🇭

If you’ve been to Thailand, you’ve probably heard people say “Sawasdee kha” or “Sawasdee khrap.”

Most foreigners know it simply as “hello.”

But there’s actually more meaning behind it, especially when it comes together with the Wai. 🙏

The wai is not simply putting your hands together and bowing.

Did you know there are different levels of the Wai?

The position of your hands can show the level of respect you’re giving to the person.

🙏 Lower level — around the chest

This is commonly used when greeting people of a similar age or social level.

You put your palms together around your chest and give a slight bow.

🙏 Middle level — around the face

The hands are raised higher, around the lower face or nose area.

This can be used when showing more respect, such as when greeting someone older or in a higher position.

🙏 Higher level — around the forehead

The hands are raised closer to the forehead, with a deeper bow.

This is used to show a higher level of respect, particularly toward highly respected people or in more formal situations.

And there are even more specific forms of wai used in religious or royal contexts, where the gesture becomes much more formal.

So you can see that the wai isn’t just:

“Hello.”

There’s a whole social meaning behind it.

And this is something Thai children learn from a young age.

They learn to greet their teachers, show respect to older people, and understand that how you greet someone can depend on who that person is.

As a foreigner, you might feel a little awkward doing it at first.

I know I did.

But after living here for years, it becomes natural.

And that’s one thing I really appreciate about Thai culture.

Respect isn’t only spoken. It’s shown through your actions.

So the next time someone says:

“Sawasdee kha.”
or
“Sawasdee khrap.”

Remember

It’s not just a hello.

It’s a greeting, a gesture of politeness, and a small reflection of the Thai value of respect. 🇹🇭🙏

Dati, akala ko kapag nag-abroad ka, ang biggest challenge mo lang is being away from your family.

Pero habang tumatagal, narealize ko na marami ka pa palang matututunan, especially when it comes to people.

Working with different people will always mean hearing things about you. Mostly negative. And you know what? That’s normal.

Hindi mo kailangang i-please ang lahat.

Some people will like you.
Some people won’t.
Some will support you.
Some will criticize you.

And sometimes, kahit wala kang ginagawa na kahit ano, may masasabi pa rin sila.

That’s part of life.

Living abroad taught me not to take everything personally.

Do your work.
Be respectful.
Keep improving yourself.
And don’t let other people’s opinions define you.

Because at the end of the day, you can’t please everyone, and you don’t have to.
