SUHAKAM Raises Concern Over Growing Hate Against the Rohingya Community

Kuala Lumpur | 3 June 2026

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) has expressed deep concern over increasing hate speech, discriminatory rhetoric, and online attacks targeting the Rohingya community in Malaysia, particularly during the recent Eid al-Adha celebrations.

SUHAKAM stated that refugees are human beings who deserve dignity, respect, and compassion. The commission emphasized that the Rohingya have endured decades of persecution, statelessness, forced displacement, and serious human rights violations in Myanmar.

The commission also stressed the importance of distinguishing refugees from migrants, noting that refugees flee persecution, conflict, and violence rather than seeking economic opportunities.

SUHAKAM called on the public, media, public figures, and social media users to reject hate speech, misinformation, stereotypes, and inflammatory rhetoric against refugees and asylum seekers. It also urged Malaysia to continue upholding the principles of humanity, non-discrimination, and respect for human dignity.

UNHCR Calls for Continued Global Support for 1.2 Million Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh

The Rohingya Reality TV | 2 June 2026

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged the international community not to forget the nearly 1.2 million Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh.

Speaking in Geneva, UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch said that most Rohingya refugees remain in camps in Cox's Bazar, where many continue to rely on humanitarian assistance for food, healthcare, education, and protection.

UNHCR highlighted ongoing humanitarian needs and warned that funding shortages could further affect vulnerable groups, including women, children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and people displaced by recent violence in Myanmar's Rakhine State.

According to UNHCR, the UN and its partners have appealed for US$710.5 million to support Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh.

UNHCR also expressed concern about dangerous sea journeys taken by some refugees seeking better opportunities, citing reports that nearly 900 Rohingya were reported missing or dead in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal during 2025.

The agency called for continued international support and efforts to create conditions that would allow Rohingya refugees to return to Myanmar voluntarily, safely, and with dignity.

Rohingya Man Killed in Penang; Three Suspects Remanded for Investigation

Bukit Mertajam, Penang | 1 June 2026

Malaysian police have remanded three Rohingya suspects, including two women, for seven days to assist in the investigation into the death of a 31-year-old Rohingya man in Taman Belibis, Simpang Ampat, Penang.

According to police, the victim was found dead at the scene after sustaining multiple stab wounds. A 26-year-old Rohingya woman, believed to be the victim's wife, was also injured during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Hospital Seberang Jaya.

Police previously detained a 38-year-old Rohingya man in connection with the case. On 1 June, a magistrate granted a seven-day remand order for three suspects aged between their 20s and 30s to facilitate further investigations.

Authorities also recovered a knife believed to be linked to the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest the case may have stemmed from a domestic dispute, according to police, although the exact motive remains under investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code (murder) and Section 326 of the Penal Code (causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon).

Police investigations are ongoing, and no court has yet determined the guilt or liability of any suspect.
