🕊️ Remembering the Naf River Massacre (5–6 August 2024) Two Years Since the Deadly Attack on Rohingya Civilians
Today marks two years since the Naf River Massacre, when Rohingya civilians fleeing violence in Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, Myanmar, were attacked while attempting to cross the Naf River into Bangladesh.
According to reports and investigations by Fortify Rights, The Guardian, CNN, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and other international media and human rights organisations, survivors and witnesses reported that civilians, including women, children, and elderly people, were affected by attacks involving drones, artillery, mortar fire, and small arms.
The reports stated that many people were killed or injured while gathering near the river in search of safety. Witnesses described bodies along the riverbanks, overcrowded boats capsizing, and families losing loved ones while attempting to escape the violence.
Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International reported that Rohingya witnesses believed the Arakan Army (AA) was responsible for the 5 August attacks. The Arakan Army denied responsibility, blamed other actors, and stated that it would investigate the incident. Independent, impartial investigations remain necessary to establish the full facts and ensure accountability.
The attacks took place amid escalating fighting between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar military, leaving Rohingya civilians caught between armed groups and facing renewed displacement, insecurity, and humanitarian suffering.
Two years later, survivors and victims’ families continue to seek truth, justice, and accountability. A credible and independent investigation remains essential to protect civilians and help prevent future atrocities.
