Wetland
Convention on Wetlands

K*T PLA KHAO
An urban wetland so close that we barely notice it.
Many people in Warin Chamrap are familiar with the name K*t Pla Khao.
Some live nearby.
Some pass it regularly.
Others know it simply as the name of a neighbourhood or place.
But what does “k*t” actually mean?
What is a “k*t”?
In Isan and Lao usage, k*t is a local term for certain types of water bodies.
Thailand’s Encyclopedia of Thai Culture, maintained by the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre, describes k*t as a pond or watercourse with a dead end, including curved sections of a former channel that become separated from the main river when the river changes course.
One form of this landscape corresponds to what geomorphologists call an oxbow lake.
Across Isan, however, local vocabulary for water landscapes is much more detailed.
K*t, nong, hong, wang, b**g, and tham are among the terms used to distinguish different forms of water and floodplain landscapes.
These words reflect how people have learned to read the land, water and seasonal changes around them.
---
What kind of place is K*t Pla Khao?
K*t Pla Khao lies within Warin Chamrap Municipality in Ubon Ratchathani.
Today it is surrounded by houses, roads, schools, shops, parks and urban communities.
Within that same landscape, however, a wetland system remains.
Between 2004 and 2005, Assistant Professor Sommai Chinnak and colleagues conducted research on people, livelihoods and *k*t* wetland ecosystems along the boundary between Ubon Ratchathani and Warin Chamrap municipalities.
The study covered ten communities, including K*t Pla Khao community*.
It identified k*t and seasonally flooded pa b**g pa tham forests as an important type of wetland ecosystem in Northeast Thailand and described the area as part of the Mun River ecosystem.
The research was particularly interested in the relationship between urban communities and the wetlands around them.
---
People have lived with this water
At the time of the study, local residents still depended on resources from *k*t* wetlands and flooded forests for their livelihoods.
Fishing, gathering resources and knowledge of seasonal water conditions were all part of this relationship.
Warin Chamrap Municipality also documented K*t Pla Khao in 2018 as a natural water body with various fish species that had supported nearby communities through food, water, agriculture and fishing.
For those who use the wetland directly, the landscape contains information that may be invisible to someone simply passing by.
Where fish can be found.
When water rises.
When it falls.
When it is possible to take a boat out.
This is knowledge built through everyday use of the place.
---
Why do urban wetlands matter?
K*t Pla Khao sits within the broader context of an urban wetland.
The Convention on Wetlands identifies urban wetlands as natural systems that can absorb excess rainfall, help reduce flood impacts, support biodiversity, contribute to water quality and provide natural spaces within cities.
These are general functions of urban wetlands.
At present, there is not enough site-specific research to calculate exactly how much water K*t Pla Khao can store, how much flood reduction it provides, or the monetary value of its ecosystem services.
Those questions require further study of this particular site.
---
And all of this exists inside the city
From the road, K*t Pla Khao may simply appear to be a stretch of water and vegetation beside the city.
Look closer and there are still boats, fish, aquatic plants, changing water levels and communities around the wetland.
The city and the *k*t* occupy the same landscape.
We may pass it every day.
We may have known its name since childhood.
We may live only a few hundred metres away.
Yet we may never have asked:
What is a k*t?
Who still uses this place?
And what role does a wetland like this play in the city?
Perhaps K*t Pla Khao was never forgotten.
It has simply become so familiar that we stopped looking closely at what is there.
---
What about today?
This is where the story remains open.
Much of the detailed research on livelihoods around K*t Pla Khao was conducted more than twenty years ago.
It tells us that wetlands and local communities were closely connected at that time.
But today:
How many people still use boats here?
What fish are still caught?
How is the wetland used?
Has the water changed?
How do younger residents understand this place?
Those answers need to come from the people living with K*t Pla Khao now.
And that may be the next part of the story.
Because some places are extremely close to us,
yet we may know surprisingly little about them.
