Over the past 25 years, Australia and Timor-Leste have been working together to support village and community development, as Timor-Leste moves towards decentralisation.
Community empowerment has created opportunities for women, like Albertina Exposto, to lead with confidence.
Albertina Exposto is the Chief of Aldeia Nunupu, Suku Ponilala, in Ermera, a position she holds with pride. However, becoming the leader of her aldeia came with challenges, many of them made worse by something as simple as the condition of the road near her home.
“Before PNDS built the road, it was very difficult for me. I often arrived late at meetings, and there were some households I simply could not reach. At night, I did not feel safe to travel at all. This road really supports me in my role. I can be more present, more active, and closer to my community,” she said.
The Government of Timor-Leste’s National Program for Village Development (PNDS), supported by Australia since 2012, supports sukus across the country to prioritise and implement projects for their own development, such as local roads, water systems, irrigation, community halls and repairs to schools and health centres. Australia continues our partnership with government and communities through our program.
For Albertina, the PNDS road is more than just a piece of infrastructure, it is a pathway to equality. It has strengthened her ability to lead as a woman in a space where women leaders are still few, and where every step forward matters.
