Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said the government had detained more than twenty traditional elders from his clan, accusing authorities of relying on guns to silence the opposition and forcibly displace citizens.

“Our protest carries no stones, no violence, no guns — its sole purpose is to stand in solidarity with the displaced people. We are not destabilizing the country’s security,” Sheikh Sharif said. He added that the staff accompanying him were the same colleagues who had previously escorted him to the presidency, Daljirka monument, and other public venues. “What makes them different today?” he asked.

Sheikh Sharif emphasized that freedom is God-given and a right that no one can deny. He warned that the government’s current heavy-handed approach in Mogadishu resembled the conditions that once led to the rise of the Islamic Courts Union, which he previously led. Their collapse, he noted, paved the way for the emergence of Al-Shabaab and later Daesh, whose extremist violence has continued to devastate Somalia.

I strongly condemn the Israeli attacks in Qatar — a clear violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Qatar has played a constructive role in mediation efforts, seeking a ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed: “Everyone must work towards achieving a permanent ceasefire, not destroying it.” The path forward must be rooted in diplomacy, international law, and the protection of civilians.
