Full Campaign Report : Canada by Placid Angles / John Beltran.

Pitchfork : “The Ann Arbor producer dusts off an alias he used on a 1996 ambient-techno classic and gives his jazzy, atmospheric dance music a jolt of fresh energy”

Herb Sundays : “The oeuvre of John Beltran is miles wide, though he takes up precious little space on the usual lists or amongst the Techno gossip mill. Or, better put by Shawn Reynaldo: “The history of Midwestern dance music is littered with unheralded figures and under-celebrated heroes, and while John Beltran hasn’t exactly toiled in obscurity during the past 30 years, it does seem bizarre that his music continues to be something of a niche concern.”

Tone Glow : “Beltran might be one of Michigan’s most overlooked producers, but Canada is another essential entry in his archive.“

Ban Ban Ton Ton : “John Beltran’s latest long-player as Placid Angles was promo’d last year with the title track Canada. This seemed to be a very respectful nod toward 90s “ambient” Aphex Twin, and in the press release Beltran stated that the album was intentionally a nostalgic “peak” into his own pioneering back catalogue, and those of his contemporaries. This statement is borne out by the rest of the record.”

“Amsterdam-based Retromigration has made the notion of making waves feel like a standard whenever a new record of his floats into view, such is the reverence and respect for his sound and craft. Inspired by a myriad of genres, such as soul, funk, jazz, and hip-hop, his auditory identity is one of profound melodic effusion and expert percussive sequences, which are absorbed within life-affirming atmospheres and sensory spaces. Flickering within the wide spectrum of deep house, Retromigration’s music dabbles with the curious in-between spaces, with an acute eye and ear channeling into the threads between genres that enable light bulb moments - and ever lasting musical experiences.

In a career built on continual self-evolution and musical morphology, ‘Can’t Go’ feels like yet another landmark in Retromigration’s revered career. The EP tunes itself into the pulsating energies of the club, drawing exquisite lines between bass music, footwork, garage and jungle.

The title track is seeped in rhythmic power, with heavy set kicks and high end hats providing the framework for echoing bass notes and sparse chords, which leads up to the euphoric vocal sample to take lead - ‘everywhere I turn’ rings true, as the heads get down and the feet work in unison.”

“In the wake of his 2011 breakout debut The Story About You, Moomin was praised for the “resplendent naturalism” within his “beautiful, introspective take on house music”. He had cast a spell of “modern house music magic”, crafting a sound “you can listen to anytime, anywhere”. The acclaim was universal, yet Moomin remains humble, describing himself simply as “a music-lover”. Since that unmissable debut, he has further defined his unique inner-world sound through releases on kindred spirit imprints Smallville, WOLF Music, OATH, and Aim, while also launching his own vinyl and tape label, Closer, a passion project that perfectly matches the tactile and intimate nature of his productions.

Now, with Into The Distance, those unmistakable Moomin signatures are taken even further. Tracks like Joni and A Way Out pulse with understated energy, while Caught In A Memory and Night Moves evoke a dreamy nostalgia. The album moves between deep house, downtempo, and ambient influences, creating a rich, cinematic listening experience. From the hypnotic rhythms of Island Dreams to the drifting melancholy of Summer’s End, Moomin explores movement, both physical and emotional, through sound.

After years of performing at some of the world’s most influential clubs and festivals, Moomin made the decision to step away from live shows. Since 2019, he has successfully run his own mastering studio, continuing to pursue his deep love of music and technology. Into The Distance is a reflection of this period—an album that feels deeply considered yet effortlessly fluid, designed for both introspective moments and expansive journeys.”

“On his first record for an outside label in seven years, Batu delivers a decisive statement on his recent focus on hypermodern club music with a distinctly UK streak. Question Mark heralds the launch of Lethal Press, a boutique sister-label to Istanbul-based Oath focused on exclusive releases from landmark artists.

There’s a dembow lean to ‘Clump’ as it comfortably rolls along around the 100BPM mark, all the better to hear every infinitesimal modulation of the undulating low frequency lead, the steely swell of textural layering and the crystalline crack of the drums.“
