7 Things a Starting DJ Should NOT Do
1. Don’t Choose a Bad DJ Name
Your DJ name is your brand. Make it easy to remember, pronounce, and search.
2. Don’t Play Every Song You Like
Read the crowd. A DJ plays for the people, not just for themselves.
3. Don’t Ignore Your Music Library
Know your tracks, BPMs, keys, intros, outros, and clean versions before the gig.
4. Don’t Overuse Effects
Echo, reverb, filters and transitions are tools—not the whole performance. Keep it clean.
5. Don’t Show Up Late to a Gig
Arrive early enough to set up, test the sound and prepare yourself. Professionalism matters.
6. Don’t Undervalue Yourself
Don’t accept every gig for free. Build experience, but know when your time and skill deserve payment.
7. Don’t Stop Learning
Watch other DJs, practice regularly, learn new techniques and keep improving. Your first year is just the beginning.
