Jack Donovan Foley tarafından 1927 yılında, sesli film yapımına geçildiği zamanda bulunmuştur. Foleyi yapan kişiye " Foley Artist " denir. Çekilmiş görüntülerin üstüne stüdyoda post prodüksiyon aşamasında aynı doğallıkta ve görüntüdeki ile aynı senkronizasyonda ses çıkartma sanatıdır. Bu sesler yürüme, kıyafet, kapı, kalem,saat veya çay karıştırma olabilir, gördüğünüz herşeyi hayal gücünüzüde kull

anarak aynen yapmanız gerekmektedir. Önemli olan da bunları gerçekçi yapabilmektir. Dünya'da foley tüm Tv dizilerine,sinema filmlerine,konsol oyunlarına,reklamlara yapılmaktadır. Görme engelliler için yapılan sesli kitap okuma ve benzeri canlı radyo piyeslerine gerçekçilik ve derinlik kazandırmak konusunda etkisi büyüktür. Türkiye'deki İLK ve TEK Foley stüdyosu ÖREN FİLM'dedir.
