A day at Top of Europe β¨
A full day exploring the Jungfrau region β from Grindelwald all the way up to Europe's highest railway station. Here's how it went π
- Breakfast at Hotel Derby
Stayed right in Grindelwald at Hotel Derby, directly across from the train station. Falling asleep watching trains roll by the window? Genuinely one of my favorite parts of the trip.
- Departure from Grindelwald
Grindelwald is the gateway to the Eiger and the Jungfrau region β base camp for the day ahead.
- Eiger Express
The world's most modern tricable gondola, connecting Grindelwald Terminal to the Eiger Glacier station.
- Jungfraubahn
The cogwheel railway that finishes the climb to the top. Built between 1896 and 1912 β 16 years of construction, much of it tunneled by hand straight through the Eiger and MΓΆnch.
- Top of Europe
Jungfraujoch sits at 3,454m β the highest railway station in Europe. The Sphinx Observatory up here is also the highest permanently staffed research station on the continent.
- Sent a postcard from Europe's highest post box
- A tour at Lindt Chocolate Heaven
Swiss chocolate at the top of Europe.
- Aletsch Glacier
The largest glacier in the Alps β about 23.6km long, up to 900m deep. It's losing around 50m in length every year to climate change.
β¨HappyRail was my sponsor for this wonderful trip. Since 2002, they've specialized in international train travel, working directly with more than 60 European national and private railway companies. Everything β tickets, reservations, hotel info, and Interrail passes β is saved in one app, so my whole trip was in one place. It was genuinely so convenient β zero logistics stress.
