My [21F] mother [46F] hates my sister [6F] with Down Syndrome and blames her for our dad leaving us. She won't let me take custody of her and I don't know how to continue living like this

To preface this, we live in Austin, TX.

My mom was 39 when she got pregnant with my sister and a few days after her diagnostic screening confirmed it was a baby with Down Syndrome, our dad moved out and filed for divorce. Without my dad's income, mom had to sell our house and we moved to a different neighborhood. It was nice, but it wasn't an upper middle class neighborhood like the one we used to live in. During her pregnancy, she was committed to being the best mom to my sister (let's call her Mary) and me. A few weeks after giving birth to Mary who, other than Down Syndrome, had no other health issues, my parent's divorce was finalized.

Mom got full custody and dad got visitation rights twice a week, but I refused to see him and he didn't want anything to do with Mary. To this day, we don't have a relationship at all. Him and mom were never very hands on parents, I had a lot of nannies growing up, but I never thought both of them would end up being so fu**ed up. The finalization of the divorce hit my mom like a truck and she spiraled into postpartum depression. I was a high school freshman when all of this happened and, on top of having to move to a different place where I didn't know anyone, I had to step up and help take care of my sister because my mom couldn't do it alone.

While I was at school, she would do the most basic things like...

AITA for letting my wife’s friend quit causing her to lose multiple benefits totaling in $50k+?

I (35M) worked with my wife’s close friend Sara (29F) who she has know since college. They were sorority sisters and my wife was her big and Sara was the little or something along those lines. Sara and I were in the same industry and she eventually applied for a position at the same Company I currently worked at. She got the job almost 3 yrs ago and we have been at the same midwestern office. She was apart of my team but I dealt very little with her directly and wasn’t her direct report.

Sara had done very well and was promoted within 6 months to a good position. She seemed to be on a fast track but recently stumbled in her latest interview for a sought after position. We gave the position to a more deserving candidate in my eyes. As we sometimes see Sara was upset and it was the start of her leaving the company. I could sense she was applying elsewhere and did put in a 2 weeks notice, offered to stay on 1 month inline with her projects deadline, which we accepted. We wanted to keep Sara but I could not give her a raise because she was already at the top of her pay scale. Her job offer was actually lower pay so there was no leverage there either. I told her this within a few days and Sara was pretty upset. She decided to leave immediately.

Here is where the issue comes up. Sara was aggressive with her 401k and the company stock options by my recommendation. We...

AITA for basically calling a girl ugly when she kept pressing me??

I’m pretty sure I’m the a__hole here because I feel really bad because I realize that I shouldn’t have commented on appearance of a girl around my age who might be sensitive to that

Also for context I’m lvl 2 autistic (diagnosed) so I sometimes act odd in public without realizing it in the moment

So I (18F) was at a sports bar/restaurant with 2 of my friends and my brother, and at the end of my meal, I kinda did a side laying down position at the booth because I was extremely tired, but then I realized it was a bit inappropriate to do that at a restaurant so I sat up and laid my head on the table. For context, I was wearing a skirt but was wearing obvious shorts (they were puffy and s__t) and when I was lying down my head, I heard a voice so I lifted my head thinking it was a staff saying “you can’t lay down here.” (Fair enough) but then it was a girl who was also a customer that was in the booth beside us, and she said “why are you showing your ass, that’s embarrassing, that’s disgusting, why don’t you have self respect, we can see your underwear” over and over and I said “I have shorts on” and she said “they don’t look like shorts” so I said “well I don’t know what underwear you wear but these are shorts.” And then she went on her rant again about how I have no self respect and I’m disgusting, while her boyfriend tried to get...

AITA for not forcing daughter to visit her dad?

Hello, so I have a very complicated co parenting relationship with my daughter (13) dad. He lives in another state and rarely visits. He visits once a year.

We do have a court order that states he can have visits, we just need to work them out first. We do a shared calendar. Now we don't do a whole lot of stuff, so there might be 1-3 weekends that are busy throughout the entire year.

In January, he messaged me saying he would be coming out in February. I hadn't put anything on the calendar yet, but knew we would be busy only 1 weekend that month (Valentines day, then my b day is next day). That just happened to be the weekend he picked.

I told him that wasn't a good weekend, but every other weekend was completely open. He got mad, said no he was coming down that weekend and there was nothing I could do about it. Honestly wasn't going to argue with him.

So I informed my daughter that her dad was coming out that weekend. She freaked out when hearing when he was coming out. She told me her friends had told her that her crush was planning on asking her on a valentines date (would be her first ever date).

She immediately called her dad and begged him to move the weekend. He actually yelled at her, then yelled at me for 'turning her against him'. She ended up hanging up on him and has been ignoring his calls since.

Well she was asked out on...

AIO? I trust my wife, but this seems odd…

I (39m) have been married to wife (38f) for 15 years. We have an 11 year old son we’ll call “Jake” who is big into baseball. We’ve been doing the travel ball thing for a few years where we go to out of town tournaments almost every other weekend.

Relationship wise, things are okay to prerty good between wife and me. We have s__ probably once a month, sometimes more. Wife usually initiates as I’ve had some hormonal issues pop up in the last few years (low T) that I’m working on getting corrected.

The coach of Jake’s baseball team is a type A meathead type guy, very intense, likes to yell. Very competitive. Pretty good shape, looks like he’s likely on some unnatural supplements. Ok, it’s a competitive team so it’s what we signed up for. He was recently divorced. Wife and I generally find him annoying. I have noticed him making convo with wife recently, but nothing that seemed inappropriate.

So last weekend, I stayed home from Jake’s tournament and wife took him to a town about 2 hours away. They come home Sunday afternoon, nothing out of the ordinary.
I ask Jake about the tournament and how things went. He mentions that the whole team swam at the hotel pool Saturday night, and then some boys had a sleepover in a suite that one well-off family had rented at the hotel. I asked if all the boys were there at the sleepover, and he said no it was just him, the boy whose family had the room, the coaches son and a...

AITA For arguing with my wife when she refused to visit my daughter at the hospital?

I (M38) have a 9 year old daughter with a chronic heart disease that we've been dealing with since she was born. She had undergone a surgery but there are other factors that make her condition worse. She's anemic and last week was admitted to the hospital for blood transfusion saying it was necessary and more affective than medication.

In less than a month a go. My wife (my daughter's stepmom)told me that my stepdaughter wanted an iphone for her 14th birthday since she saw her best friend got one. I told her that I was willing to pay 300-250$ for a new phone but when i looked at the prices the cheapest iPhone was more than 500$. I asked my wife if I could buy my stepdaughter a used iPhone but she didn't like the idea and told me that I had money saved up (my emergency fund) that I could some of it to buy my stepdaughter the iPhone.

Thing is. My emergency fund was for my daughter. Even if I take at least 500$ from it I will end up with not enough money and I will feel helpless if my daughter needs anything like medication and medical equipment. My daughter's left hand always numbs so she uses a small ball to help her. But my stepdaughter would take it and I have to bring her another one.

My wife got upset and said that I was clearly playing favorites and overdoing it. My stepdaughter's birthday ended with arguments and fights after I got her another gift instead that cost 60$...

AITA for telling my wife’s friend to sleep on the streets?

Throwaway.

My wife's friend, "Lucy," came to stay with us for two weeks. She was close friends with my wife's late mother, who my wife, "Elle," had a close relationship with. Elle admits that she doesn't know Lucy very well, but trusts her because of her relationship with her mum.

Lucy seems to hold old-fashioned, traditional views on ideas of modesty, femininity and sexuality. Imagine her surprise when she finds a pole dancing pole in our basement. Elle isn’t a professional pole dancer/performer by any means. She just likes it - and she's damn good at it too. When Lucy saw the pole, she immediately asked Elle if she's a pr******te or a "slutty stripper." Elle denied this, explained that she likes the art of it and it's great for staying fit etc.

Lucy, for whatever reason, didn't believe her. She would make comments about Elle’s outfits like, "Of course you would wear something revealing to go shopping," or "Do you serve your "clients" food like this?" or "Your mother would be so disappointed in you becoming a w***e." Elle didn't say anything (and didn't want me to) but it's clear that those comments hurt (especially those about her mum.) I asked Lucy to stop many times, but I think she just resorted to making comments when I wasn't around.

One night, I came home to find Lucy screaming at Elle. She was calling her a w***e, a disappointment to her mum, a disgrace for not attending her mum's funeral (she couldn't because of Covid) and that she should go back to "working on...

AITA: I told my neighbors they couldn't build a fence if it was on my property when they can't build one on the edge of theirs?

My neighbors moved in about 6 months ago. They have a couple young kids and a dog.

A week ago, they approached me and asked if I minded if they put up a fence between our yards. I was unsure of why they were asking me until they showed me where it would go. The edge of their yard is on a steep hill and since they couldn't build a fence on the hill they wanted to build it at the top, a couple feet into my yard.

I told them absolutely not, and they got defensive and said that they didn't want to build it at the bottom because it would cut off part of their land and that I should just let them build the fence because it was only a couple feet.

They asked me again and said that they would cover the cost of the fence if I let them put it on my land, which I was a little confused about because I was never going to pay for it?

I still said no but they've been bothering me about it and say I should just let them because I hardly use that part of my yard(except for my blueberry bushes), and a fence will keep their kids and their dogs safer.

They keep trying to convince me to do it and I'm starting to wonder if I just should, AITA?

AITA for telling my MIL that she will never see my child?

Not really my MIL, but “girlfriend’s mum” seems like a mouthful.

My girlfriend, “Ella,” and I have been together for almost 4 years now and we are expecting our first child later on this year (Ella is 5 months pregnant.)

As much as I love Ella, I cannot stand her family, especially her mother. From the stories I’ve heard and from my own experiences with her, her mother seems to be an extremely disrespectful person. Because of her attitude, Ella has significantly cut contact with most of her family. We also didn’t really tell them that we were pregnant, they found out through Ella’s cousin.

Upon hearing about Ella’s pregnancy, Ella’s mum has been pestering us about inviting us to dinner to “congratulate and celebrate our growing family.” It’s a nice gesture, but I was hesitant to accept because of the way that she (and the rest of Ella’s family) usually act. After almost a month of ignoring the invitation, Ella convinced me to take her up on it. The dinner was held at this very expensive, very fancy, fine-dining restaurant.

At first, to my shock, the dinner was going well. Ella’s mum apologised for her past behaviour and stated that she wanted to be a good grandmother moving forward. Her sister also offered support in the form of babysitting, old baby clothes, etc. The conservation was friendly and I was very surprised to not hear anything insulting from Ella’s mum directed at Ella.

When Ella stepped out to use the washroom, Ella’s sister made a comment about her “supposed” weight gain and...

WIBTA if i told people why I'm not invited to my sisters wedding?

I am using a throwaway account for this.

I (23f) have a younger sister (21f) who is getting married soon. I got to meet her fiance at christmas and thought he was great. I was so extremely happy to find out she was engaged. I noticed around April that I wasn't being invited to any of the wedding events. I asked my sister about it and she called me.

When she called me she explained that se wasnt inviting me as she believes now that I've been lying to her since we were children. Growing up my mom wasn't the greatest towards me, she ignored my mental health issues, was homoohobic towards me, and constantly belittled me for every aspect of my personality. I talked to my sister about all of this stuff as it was happening. My sister told me that back in sepetember she asked my parents about the stuff I'd told her and my mom denied all of it.

My sister told me on the phone that she thinks that I've been lying about all of it since we were kids. This is all stuff I've spoken about in therapy for years now and mine and my mom's relationship is great now.

Since the invitations have gone out, some extended family have asked me about my plans around the wedding and I've been honest about whats happening. I'm unsure of if I wbta if i continued to tell family members why I'm not there if they ask why I'm not there on the day.

ETA: I don't plan on just...
