Four killed in St Augustine forest shootout

The ordinarily peaceful atmosphere of Upper St Michael's Road, off St John's Road, St Augustine, was shattered on Thursday when gunmen reportedly engaged an elite squad of police in a firefight.
Sources disclosed to ADD News TT that the shootout led to the deaths of four men who have not yet been conclusively identified.
Preliminary information revealed that officers were following up on enquiries into the kidnapping of twenty-six-year-old Anisha Singh in Upper St John's Road when the firefight erupted.
A pistol and automatic rifle were seized after the shootout.
ADD News TT is informed that the head of the North-Central Division Snr Supt Richard Smith together with ASP Darryl Ramdass and ACP in charge of Intelligence and Investigations Suzette Martin visited the scene and addressed members of the media.
The officers were guarded on whether there was any conclusive link between the police-involved shooting and Singh's kidnapping but only maintained that the enquiry was underway.
However, it is believed that a gang in the area was behind Singh's kidnapping.
The forested area is accessible mainly by a narrow dirt road, which winds through steep hillsides bordered by dense bush.
