On 1 August 1976, Trinidad and Tobago took the final step to full sovereignty by becoming a Republic. Sir Ellis Clarke was sworn in as our first President and, on 24 September that year, our new Parliament met for the very first time under the Republican Constitution.
Republic Day is a reminder that our Constitution was built by our people, for our people, with the promise of fundamental rights, free elections and government accountable to us.
Today we honour that legacy and celebrate the freedom to shape our own destiny.
Happy Republic Day, Trinidad and Tobago ๐น๐น
