Letter to the Editor
Subject: Urgent National Action Needed on Defective 20lb Gas Cylinders

Dear Editor,

As a concerned citizen, I wish to raise urgent attention to the alarming and deadly increase in gas cylinder explosions, fires, and leaks across Trinidad and Tobago.

These incidents have not only caused extensive property damage but have also resulted in serious injuries and, tragically, the loss of lives. This is no longer a matter of isolated accidents — IT IS A NATIONAL CRISIS.

For decades, households across the country have relied on 20lb LPG cylinders supplied mainly by National Petroleum (NP) and RAMCO.

However, the recent string of explosions and fires clearly shows that the safety and reliability of these cylinders can no longer be taken for granted.

The frequency and severity of these incidents are far too great to simply blame citizens for improper use.

The repeated claims that these accidents are caused by faulty regulators or hoses are both unfounded and dismissive. In many cases, it is clear that the problem lies within the gas cylinders themselves — defective, aging, or compromised tanks that pose a constant danger to families.

When lives are being lost, it is unacceptable for authorities and suppliers to shift responsibility away from the true source of the problem.

We, the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, therefore call for an immediate national replacement program for all 20lb gas cylinders distributed by NP and RAMCO. This initiative must be conducted under strict government supervision and treated as a matter of public safety and national urgency.

Every home in Trinidad and Tobago deserves access to safe, certified gas cylinders — not ticking time bombs.
We also demand full transparency from NP, RAMCO, and the Ministry of Energy regarding the inspection, testing, and certification of all cylinders currently in use.

Citizens deserve answers, accountability, and assurance that the gas we depend on daily is safe.

Too many lives have already been lost. Too many families have suffered.

The time for talk has passed — the time for national action is now.

Sincerely,

J. Flemming
Concerned Citizen

"I wish to share with the public, the swift and coordinated response I experienced from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, following a recent intrusion alert at my property.

I reached out to Inspector Paula Hospedales and No. 14536 Sgt. Evans, of the Arouca Police Station, both of whom I’ve had the honour of serving alongside in community policing initiatives—and their immediate action set everything in motion.

Corporal Ali of the Piarco Police Station promptly gathered all necessary information from and dispatched assistance without delay.

Upon arrival, No. 18534 PC Nicholas, No. 9880 PC Checkley and No. 17718 W/Cpl (Ag.) Beckles-Lawrence, of the North Central Emergency Response Unit, conducted a thorough sweep of the premises, inside and out, offering both reassurance and professionalism during a very worrying situation.

The six-minute turnaround and ā€˜all hands on deck’ approach reaffirmed my belief that our police officers are here not only to protect, but to stand in partnership with us civilians.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to each of you for your dedication, protection, and service."

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service wishes to applaud the professional and dedicated work of these officers and encourages all officers to continue to Protect and Serve with P.R.I.D.E. The TTPS also calls on all citizens to continue sharing their positive experiences with us, using .

DELCY: "KAMLA LEADING T&T "OFF A CLIFF"

Venezuelan Vice President and Energy Minister Delcy Rodriguez says Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is leading the people of Trinidad and Tobago ā€œoff-a cliff" when it comes to the Dragon Gas deal, adding that the country will have to pay for any molecule of natural gas exported from Venezuela.

Rodriguez was speaking moments ago at the Venezuela Productiva 2030 economic forum. During her address Rodriguez veered from her presentation to refer to the United States Treasury Department’s granting of an Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) licence to Trinidad to negotiate with Venezuela for the development of the Dragon project.

She claimed that if Venezuela did not export gas to Trinidad, the country’s economy would collapse and that US State Secretary Marco Rubio had sold Persad-Bissessar a lie.

The Book Grant and School Supplies Programme is now in doubt after the Education Minister confirmed it is currently under review. No funds have been allocated to the initiative in this financial year.

During last evening’s Standing Finance Committee, when the Ministry of Education’s $5.2 billion allocation came under scrutiny, St Ann’s East MP Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly questioned why there was no allocation for the programme in fiscal 2026.

Minister Dr Michael Dowlath responded, ā€œMr Chairman, through you, this grant, we will look at it for the mid-term review.ā€

Seeking clarity, Dr Gadsby-Dolly asked, ā€œSo, the question, can I just confirm, when you say you will look at it for the mid-term review, is it that you will allocate in the mid-term review, or is it that you’re looking to determine whether or not you will allocate?ā€

The government has cut $45 million from the On the Job (OJT) Training Programme, but the Finance Minister assures that more sustainable jobs are coming.

During an analysis of expenditure for the re-established Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, St Ann’s East MP Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly questioned why the programme faced a cut.

ā€œI notice that there is a $45 million decrease in 2026 allocation, which is $275 million. Is this the line item that is used to pay the actual OJT trainees? So with a reduction of $45 million, will the same number of trainees be employed as in the previous year?ā€ she asked Minister Prakash Persad.

Persad responded, ā€œWell, there are different levels of trainees. There are five levels and they are paid at different amounts, varying from CXC people to degree people. So you can have the same amount or more with the same quantum.ā€

However, the former Education Minister was not satisfied with the response.

The govĀernĀment has cut $45 milĀlion from the On the Job (OJT) TrainĀing ProĀgramme, but the FiĀnance MinĀisĀter asĀsures that more susĀtainĀable jobs are comĀing.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Director of the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, Evan Thompson, says Tropical Storm Melissa is expected to become a hurricane by Friday, with the island beginning to feel the impact of the system on Thursday.

ā€œIt is expected to, however, become a hurricane, which is likely to occur sometime by Friday as we go into the weekend. Now, the system will most likely impact Jamaica as early as Thursday, which is tomorrow. We should be getting rainfall from the system at that time. We continue to have the country under a tropical storm watch. That is what is there now, it is not a warning but a watch and that means tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours,ā€ Thompson said.

He was speaking during a special press briefing held on Wednesday in preparation for Tropical Storm Melissa.
