DID THE DOLPHINS SURVIVE?
A small pod of dolphins reportedly beached themselves along Store Bay in Tobago around midday on Monday.
Videos of the strandings circulated on social media depicted approximately six dolphins swimming to the beach’s shores, as beachgoers attempted to guide them back to sea.
The animals appeared to be distressed as they reached the sands, members of the public in some cases pulling them backwards into the waters by their tails.
The Express could not confirm the number of dolphins that were stranded.
However, Public Relations Officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TTMMSN), Dr. Wade Seukeran, yesterday told the Express that the group had been informed of the event. Shortly after, he said, the group was told that the animals had again made their way to sea, as a result of public intervention.
“We are a part of the stranding group that responds in Tobago and there were reports that the dolphins went back out to sea. Before there was a trained response the public had tried to assist the animals to get back out into deeper waters and the last report, we got was that the dolphins were not on the beach. We are still trying to gather as much information as we can,” he said.
