"It was like a game to me to see how it working."

Richard Trancoso was around 15 when his father's home in Upper Cumaca became a solar pilot project in 2004, one of the first in their off-grid community to have power at all. For a decade, it worked. Then the batteries died, and there was no way to replace them.

Richard is still raising his own children in Upper Cumaca today, without power. This is one story from our full investigation into why solar remains out of reach for so many in Trinidad and Tobago.

In our latest investigation, we go from off-grid communities in Cumaca still living without power, to a solar installer turning away customers he can't in good conscience serve, to the country's flagship 92MW solar farm, currently sitting offline.
Two ministers were sent detailed questions weeks ago. Neither has responded.
