The Honourable Phillip Watts, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs (MSYA), welcomed rising national swim star Johann-Matthew Matamoro to discuss his impressive athletic journey, Olympic aspirations, and the support needed to help Trinidad and Tobago make waves on the international stage.
Mr. Matamoro, a standout student-athlete currently attending the University of Indianapolis, has consistently excelled in both academics and athletics. Not only has he secured a place on the Dean’s Honor Roll by maintaining a GPA above 3.4, but he has also proudly represented the Red, White, and Black at top international competitions, earning a medal haul that includes:
* Paraguay: Bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay (setting a national record), 13th in the 100m backstroke
* Mexico: Silver in the 50m backstroke, 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays (setting a national record), 4th in the 100m backstroke
* Bahamas: Gold in the 100m backstroke, Silver in the 50m backstroke
* El Salvador: Bronze in the 100m backstroke, 4th in the 50m backstroke
* CARIFTA and CCCAN Games: Multiple medal wins
During the courtesy call, Matamoro shared his vision of forming Trinidad and Tobago’s first-ever Olympic relay swimming team, with his eyes firmly set on the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games. He emphasized the crucial need for sustained support to balance the demands of elite sport and academic excellence, particularly in areas such as international tuition funding and access to world-class swim equipment.
Minister Watts lauded Matamoro’s extraordinary discipline and dedication, reassuring him that the Ministry is committed to backing elite athletes through initiatives like the Elite Athlete Assistance Programme. The Minister also extended heartfelt gratitude to Matamoro’s parents for their steadfast support in nurturing their son’s talent and ambition.
