Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has firmly dismissed Opposition claims that the State of Emergency could be extended for up to five years, describing the remarks as fear-mongering.

She maintained that the measures are temporary and aimed at protecting law-abiding citizens from violent threats, adding that public polling reflects broad support for the government’s actions.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC says the 500-metre buffer zone around 15 designated buildings is a necessary security measure under the State of Emergency.

Referencing a protest outside the Office of the DPP last month, she said intelligence reports indicated that gang members had infiltrated some gatherings.

She stressed that the State has a duty to protect legitimate protesters, public servants, and citizens accessing critical and high-risk government buildings.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC says the State of Emergency remains a vital tool in the fight against crime, as the government continues its efforts to strengthen national security and protect citizens.

Speaking during Wednesday's debate in the Lower House on the motion to extend the State of Emergency for a further three months, she warned that the fight against criminality is far from over and cautioned that lifting the measure prematurely could jeopardise the gains already made in restoring law and order.
