We continue our celebration of “T&T History Month”, bringing you some highlights of “Then and Now” from our archives.

In this post, we feature the banks then and now, on Independence Square. The 19th century photograph shows the ornate building which housed the Royal Bank of Canada, which displayed the British Royal Coat of Arms on its facade. This magnificent entrance was flanked by Corinthian columns. At the time this was the formal face of official architecture.
The other photo taken in 2025, shows The RBC Royal Bank sitting in place of the former Royal Bank, next to another popular bank of this time, Republic Bank Ltd.

The 19th century photo and many others like it, can be found in the book "A Photograph Album of Trinidad at the turn of the 19th Century". It is available in bookstores in Trinidad and online.

As we declared August “T&T History Month”, we continue to bring you some highlights of “Then and Now” from our archives.

In this post, we feature the hustle and bustle during a Carnival Jour Ouvert at the junction of Frederick Street and Marine Square, now Independence Square. Note the masquerader in a typical "bat" costume, waving his flag as if conducting traffic, as well as the fact that all the men wore hats during that time.

The old photo is taken from a section in the book "The Photograph Album of Trinidad", where photographs taken by Major Carr, a police officer and father of former Police Commissioner Thomas Carr, captured panoramic views of the carnivals of 1919 and 1920. Cameras in that period were not in the hands of many and as such, there are very few photographs of people in everyday life back then. It is a pleasure to be able to share this one with you here, alongside a more modern image of the same location, taken in 2025.

This is a book that should be in your library. It is available in bookstores in Trinidad and online.

Love your history and your country!

Bracketed by Emancipation Day on the 1st and Independence on the 31st, we think that August is the perfect month to declare as “T&T History Month”! During “T&T History Month” we will bring you some highlights of “Then and Now” from our archives.

Plus it’s the holidays, where you can have some fun with the kids looking at historical photos and then going out and finding the location what it looks like today. A great book to peruse is “A Photograph Album of Trinidad” which is available in bookstores in Trinidad and online.

Love your history and your country!

We are feeling thoughtful on Emancipation Day 2025, which makes it 191 years that the British government abolished African slavery all over the British Empire, of which the West Indies then formed a part.

On our blog “Caribbean History Archives” is a post entitled "Emancipation Day - An Eyewitness’ Account of Emancipation Day 1st August, 1834”.
Written by Lieutenant Colonel Capadose, a British Army Official, while stationed in Trinidad, it was published by Capadose in 1845 in the book ‘Sixteen Years in the West Indies'.

It is well worth reading for those interested in history!

Books are really expensive to produce, especially in the Caribbean where everything from paper to ink to binding materials needs to be imported. Publishing houses may offer a mixed model, whereby the author provides financing and the publishing house undertakes the production and distribution of the book, and both share marketing efforts. This is how it has been done historically, which proves beneficial to both parties. The next option of course, is to seek third-party sponsorship.

Most foreign publishing houses only work via agents – there are lots of tips on the internet on how to find one. Find out which agents specialise in your genre of book. For instance, Paria Publishing specialises in historical publications rather than novels or children’s books. Publishers base their decision to take your work on its earnings potential.
In the Caribbean islands, we don’t have many indigenous publishing houses. Different currencies and expensive shipping is often prohibitive for us to sell books outside of our home islands.

Let’s chat about it if you wish!

Today marks two years after the passing of Paria Publishing's founder Gérard A. Besson on 25 July 2023. He would be so pleased that his blog, "Caribbean History Archives", has crossed the 2 million page view mark!
Caribbean History Archives is a blog that he created for those interested in Trinidad and Tobago history. Thank you, Jerry, for continuing to bring so much knowledge and entertainment to people from all over the world with this blog, with the books you wrote and the museums you created.

Publishing houses tend to make all the decisions when it comes to marketing and distributing your book. If you are a self-publisher, those decisions are up to you.
Either way to sell your book, you will need to do a lot yourself. Leverage your social network, hold readings and signings, talk about your book to people and spread the word on your social media. Remember that John Grisham sold his first book “A Time to Kill” from his car trunk to people in diners, telling truck drivers “This is a really great book, you should read it!”

If you decide to become a self-publisher, give us a call or send an email. We are here to help!

Today, Alice and Dominic Besson set out to visit the Alma Jordan Library at the University of the West Indies with a gift. We donated the "guard books" with print advertisements, flyers and posters formerly belonging to our founder Gérard A. Besson, HBM, D. Litt (hons) (1942–2023).
These guard books were compiled by Besson’s agency “Creative Advertising” in the 1970s and 80s. The clippings are pasted on large pages and bound in these hardcover volumes. Each clipping is annotated with the newspaper in which it was published and the date. In advertising long ago, these guard books served as a record that the artwork had been published, should disputes arise with the customer.
Creative Advertising was an illustration-based agency. As such, the artwork was done by famous Trinidadian artists such as Michael King, Peter Sorzano, Peter Shim, Stuart Hahn, Jeffrey Pataysingh and Haydn Strasser. The 1970s were an important decade in Trinidad and Tobago’s history. Many national institutions, like the National Commercial Bank, the National Insurance Board and T&TEC were either started up or reorganised. These guard books document the communication for the launch and establishment of these institutions.
Gérard Besson was one of the pioneers of advertising in Trinidad and Tobago. His style, wit, humour, and creative spark are reflected in all these ads, which he conceptualised, wrote and designed (art directed). His keen sense of contemporary culture and observation of society make this collection a treasure trove for sociological study of the 1970s and 80s.
The guard books are also a wonderful testament to the business spirit of those decades, when business owners allowed an agency to employ much more wit and humour in their communications than today. There are very funny, original, whacky things to be found in these guard books that will delight the researcher.

If you send your work to a publishing house and it gets accepted, they will make most of the decisions on the design, size and format for your book.
As a self-publisher, you have the final say on how your book should look and flow. Have a professional graphic artist work with you to knock your book into shape! Also, be aware of the legal implications relevant to copyrighting matters, like using other people’s photos.

If you need further advice, feel free to contact us.

If you go the route of finding a publishing house, you need to be aware that their editor will make many decisions about your content. They want your title to be marketable and are concerned with factual correctness.
If you self-publish, you get to decide what the content should be and how you want it communicated. However, we always recommend that you get an editor to go through the book for you and that you consult a legal practitioner to look at controversial passages to make sure you don’t get into trouble for libel.
