Keshorn Walcott opened his 2026 campaign with Men’s javelin bronze at the Wanda Diamond League meet in Rabat, Morocco, yesterday.
Walcott landed the spear 82.52 metres to claim third spot in the event. Grenadian Anderson Peters topped the field with an 86.08m throw, while second spot went to Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga at 85.97.
Walcott produced an 80.63m effort in round one. The reigning world champion followed up at 76.93 and then 75.70. In the fourth round, Walcott regained some rhythm, the Trinidad and Tobago sporting hero throwing 82.52m. He was unable to go further on the day, getting out to 79.91m and 80.32m in the last two rounds. The round four throw, though, was good enough for Diamond League bronze.
Peters, a two-time world champion, was pleased with his Rabat performance.
“I think it is a pretty good start to my season with 86 metres. However, I had some challenges with a bit of wind and I also had one throw that hit the cameraline but still went over 80 metres. As an athlete you have to adapt to moments like these. The atmosphere here in Rabat is great and the crowd was fantastic. My future plan is to compete in the Commonwealth Games and the Ultimate Championship.”
Walcott and Peters will be among the contenders for the Commonwealth Games Men’s javelin title in Glasgow, Scotland, at the end of July. Pakistan’s 2024 Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem is also the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, having won at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, England. Peters finished second and Walcott fourth.
Walcott struck gold at the 2012 Olympics, the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2025 World Athletics Championships. Gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games for the 33-year-old Toco thrower would put an exclamation mark on what is already a very impressive resume.
In his best Commonwealth Games performance to date, Walcott seized silver in Glasgow in 2014, behind Kenyan Julius Yego. Walcott would be keen to avenge that defeat when he returns to the Scottish city in July.
At the Music City Track Carnival in Tennessee, USA, on Saturday, T&T’s Tyra Gittens struck gold in the Women’s long jump with a 6.76 metres leap.
At the CYRC Distance Classic—Under the Lights at Spire Academy meet, in Ohio, Spire Academy’s Jenna-Marie Thomas topped the high school Girls’ 100m hurdles in 14.13 seconds. Thomas was second in the 400m flat race in 55.85. Trevaughn Stewart finished second in the high school Boys’ 200m in 21.46.
In Kosice, Slovakia, Daniel Igbokwe produced a 14.82m effort for fifth spot in the JBL Jump Fest Men’s Open triple jump.
At the British Milers Club (BMC) Grand Prix in Birmingham, England, Nicholas Landeau finished seventh in his section and 27th overall in the Men’s 800m in one minute, 50.46 seconds.
Two weekends ago, at the Garden State Twilight meet in New Jersey, USA, Diara Guy and Andre Marcano finished ninth and 11th, respectively, in the Men’s 100m, clocking 11.30 seconds and 11.40. Marcano was 12th in the 200m in 25.80.
