Madame Pirate, the untold story of Cheng I Sao, the greatest pirate of all times. Cheng I Sao’s career started in one of Canton’s famed “floating houses of flowers”, where she caught the eye of a pirate, Cheng I, captain of the Red Flag fleet. He bought her from the brothel, she married him in exchange for half his property. After the captain died, Cheng I Sao built the largest armada of pirates
in history. A precursor of feminism, she established a strict code of piracy respecting women. A military strategist she defied the Qing Emperor and his Portuguese and British allies, then defeated them in battle. The Widow Cheng, as she was also called, ruled over thousands of pirates, robbers, and sinners of all shades for years. Finally, rich, old and wanting to retire, Cheng I Sao negotiated her amnesty. Ennobled by an imperial decree, she spent her old days caring for her grandchild in the daytime all the while running a gambling house at night. She is the most successful pirate in history. In 2020 Estela at Serendipity Films successfully pitched the story to the Kaohsiung Film Archive. The story is being told as a VR experience featuring a mix of live action and animation and will premiere at the Kaohsiung film festival in 2021.
