I had the hardest time trying to figure out who to have on our last show! And what better candidate than Klaus Bardenhagen taiwanreporter, the German journalist who has been reporting from Taiwan as a freelancer for German media since 2008. Afterall, a journalist will have the most unbiased perspective, no? I am really hoping Klaus will be able to give some of you an unbiased perspective of Taiwan as well as maybe sharing some of his wealth of knowledge about Taiwan. It’s definitely an episode not to be missed!

Tobie Openshaw is a documentary filmmaker/photographer/anthropology researcher based in Taiwan for over 25 years. His work has been seen on channels such as National Geographic, Discovery, and the BBC. Tobie Openshaw - Documentary filmmaker and anthropology researcher - moved to Taiwan from South Africa over two decades ago. I couldn’t have picked a better guest to come to our show to share his Taiwan experience with our listeners.

Very Exciting Stuff!

I met so many people through my puppy rescue journey a few months ago and one of these awesome peeps is Miss Emma who just happen to be on the board of directors of PACK Taiwan And I’ve invited this “Vino Queen” (*Emma is the Asia Sales Director of a famous winery) to talk to us about the importance of fostering and also what additional training/support
PACK offers. Also, be sure to check out these exclusive photos Emma has shared with us of this very successful fundraising event she helped to organize with Australia New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan (ANZCham) with all the proceeds went directly to help fund PACK to rescue more animals in need! Emma even managed to get the Australian firefighters to come to Taiwan to bring more awareness of everything PACK is doing!

Lastly, If you are an animal lover and are only living in Taiwan for a short term! After listening to this episode learning what it means to be a foster for PACK sounds like something you would be interested in, you can sign up here for the foster training with PACK. I promise you, it will be the rewarding thing you will ever experience!

What's your idea of someone who has a YouTube channel, or a so-called YouTuber who makes films about Taiwan? What kind of topics do you think these YouTube channels would do about Taiwan? Do you imagine eating yummy street foods around Taipei? I am sure you all have a stereotypical image of what it looks like. But this week I am going to introduce an off-the-beaten-path kind of filmmaker, Arthur from PPhotoslot TV who creates these very interesting documentary films about Taiwan showcasing different sides of Taiwan that you might not know about!

Arthur is your man!

Did you guys enjoy the interview from last week? We will continue our part 2 interview with German teachers Deike and Michael this week. You can tell these two enjoy each other's company VERY much!

And when I found out she runs a Youtube channel with her bestie Michael, I just knew I had to invite them on the show to talk about this really awesome German learning platform they’ve created for Taiwanese audiences! Everyone here in Taiwan always thinks it’s so cool to live the lives of a foreigner. They are hip, they are cool and they stand out in a good way here in Taiwan! But packing up all your belongings to move to a new country with a different language, a different culture, different food. That’s gotta be a hard adjustment for most people. Not to mention you have to also try to meet new friends and find your support circle! And if you haven’t found that just yet, what do you do when you need just a little help adjusting to this new country!? Well, if you are in the Taipei area, you are in luck! We’ve invited the Programs Manager at TThe Community Services Center - Taipei to talk about the services they offer there to help ease English-speaking new residents on this island to help them transition to life in Taiwan! Stay tuned because this is a beneficial episode that will help newcomers who have just moved to Taiwan. But old timers can also find this very helpful! So don’t just think oh you already know everything and you don’t need help! What if you can help others? Right?

Are you ready for our part two of Chinese Medicine talk with Noah and Will? I hope you all had just as much fun learning about what it’s like to study a subject matter such as Chinese Medicine here in Taiwan. I think my Chinese has improved drastically since I moved back to Taiwan but I really don’t know if I have what it takes to pass any of Noah’s classes in his crazy intensive program. Well, I think partly that has to do with my old-fart brain these days. But you gotta give it to these two studious young men! They’ve really encompassed what my grandpa has always instilled in me when I was little! You are never too old to learn and you should never stop learning! Will, good luck to your ventures ahead now that you’ve graduated from the program. And Noah, keep up the good work! It’s no wonder your teacher has taken you in as his apprentice. Your positive approach to learning (anything really) is what is going to make you a great Chinese Medicine doctor when you graduate from your program!

My grandpa was a Chinese Medicine doctor. I grew up running around my grandpa’s house where he often would be roasting Chinese medicinal herbs in his little herb room and the air would just be filled with the strong robust aroma of all the different kinds of herbs. I especially remember always sneaking a bite of herbal Licorice from the herbal medicine drawers as if it’s candy. Needless to say, I have a special spot for Chinese medicine. Though I knew from a very early age that I am not cut out to be a doctor of any sort haha. So today we’ve invited two Americans who came to Taiwan to study Chinese Medicine in China Medical which makes both of them my Dad’s 學弟!We are going to talk about their experience of what it’s like to study Chinese Medicine here in Taiwan. If you’ve ever wondered, do you have to know how to speak Mandarin in order to study Chinese Medicine? How does Chinese medicine actually work? Do you get to poke needles in people’s bodies all day long? Well, you’ve come to the right place! We will answer all of that and more! Join us for this two part series on this fascinating subject!

It’s time for our annual tradition for me to practice carrying the entire show all on my own! SO! If you were thinking about moving to Taiwan, what would be the first thing that comes to mind!? Taiwan’s delicious food culture? Kind people everywhere that’s eager to help you with anything you need? Easy access to exploring the great outdoors? Well, we will be talking about none of that stuff this week; but rather I want to talk about something that James and I, as well as all our friends living in Taitung, had to deal with lately! Taiwan’s two biggest natural disasters - earthquakes and typhoons! This is not to scare you off or anything, I just figured there are all these great contents out there already about all the great things about Taiwan already, why not tell you about different topics that you will probably come across and deal with if you were to ever decide to live here! SO!!! Tune in if you would like to know what to expect and how to prepare for it!

I love it when I am able to interview people I know on our show. Especially when they are the pioneers of their thing! I’ve invited the husband and wife musician duo Jay and Lis to our show to talk about this really exciting concert. They just put up a concert in collaboration with the Swiss-based Curious Chamber Players. Other than conventional instrumentation (flute, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, and cello), the group extends its sound world through integrating everyday objects into this Taiwan-themed concert. Jay and Lisa went above and beyond to show all the team members around Taiwan to experience Taiwan’s food, culture, and everyday local life so they can take tall these new senses and information they’ve gathered into all the musical pieces in the concert. Jay and Lisa are putting up another really awesome show at the end of the year. If you are interested in finding out about what these two are up to, make sure you follow them on FB to get all the latest and greatest!

I really enjoyed my candid interview with Ray from Freedive Nomad the last two weeks. In the part 2 of the interview, we “dive” a little deeper into Ray’s perspective on living on an off-shore island that depends on tourism half of the year. It’s gotta be a pretty tricky relationship/dynamic between the island locals, tourists, and the island's new residents such as Raymond himself. Since we’ve become FB friends on FB, I’ve learned so much about what the island of Xiaoliuqiu has to offer. And a lot of it has to do with younger generations that have returned to the island to start new businesses, or new residents such as Ray himself who brought a different/international flair to the island. It’s really quite a cool scene there. No wonder Deep Week is being held there later this year! If you haven’t checked out this really fun week long event, you should definitely check it out! And sign up if you are even remotely thinking about trying out freediving! This is the BIGGEST freediving event happening in Taiwan and you would not want to miss it!
