A SPECIAL GIFT FOR SUBIN: A KOREAN TRADITION OF CELEBRATION
In South Korea, there is a beautiful tradition that celebrates a young girl’s first menstrual period. When a daughter experiences her first period, it is common for the father to give her flowers and cake as a way of showing love, care, and support during this important milestone in her life.
Recently, we followed this tradition for our daughter, Subin. We bought her a cake and flowers to let her know how proud we are of her and to make her feel loved and supported during this new stage of growing up.
Back in the Philippines, my own experience was very different. I remember fetching water and chopping firewood the day I got my first period. And I didn’t even have disposable napkins — I used cloth back then.
Times have truly changed, and I’m grateful that Subin can experience this special moment in a much more caring and comfortable way. As a mother, it fills my heart to be able to give her what I didn’t have.
