Taipei's city-wide cleaning drive follows recent social media posts reporting rat sightings, which have raised public concern.

During the clean-up, sightings of live and dead rats would inevitably increase.

To remove dead rats, residents should wear gloves, seal them in bags and dispose of them as regular waste, and then disinfect the area with a 1:9 bleach-water solution, the city government said.

Actor Lee Wei and his wife, Chien Yu-chia, who were also implicated in the case as followers of the "spiritual leader," were sentenced to one year and 10 months and one year and eight months in prison respectively, suspended for five years.

Several senior followers who acted as "enforcers" and the center's abbess were given 10-year sentences, while the remaining defendants received terms ranging from one-and-a-half to 10 years.

The court found that the victim, who worked as an accountant for the Buddhist center, ultimately died of rhabdomyolysis — or severe muscle breakdown — brought on by prolonged physical abuse.

Former sergeant squad leader Chen Tai-yin, who served with lieutenant Lee Chun-ta in the same unit from 2011 to 2013, retired in 2013 and was facing financial difficulties when he met an unidentified Chinese intelligence operative surnamed Wang through a friend in November 2023, prosecutors said.

Wang allegedly offered Lee a sign-on bonus equivalent to twice his monthly military salary, with additional bonuses promised for every delivery of classified or sensitive documents, they said, adding that Lee did not immediately agree.

People using Holafly, an Ireland-based eSIM card operator, would see an IP address on their mobile phones belonging to Hong Kong-based China Mobile, cacaFly CEO Nathan Chiu said.

The study found that after an eSIM profile was installed, it might automatically use the SIM application toolkit to secretly establish connections to servers in Singapore and receive text messages from Hong Kong numbers, all without the user’s knowledge, Chiu said.

Packets containing metadata — such as international mobile subscriber identity, international mobile equipment identity, location trajectory, traffic behavior and domain name system queries — were routed through the core network of China Mobile before reaching their final destinations, he said.

Gusa Publishing has released numerous books that contradicted the Chinese Communist Party’s historical narrative and ideology.

In February last year, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Li to three years in prison, deprivation of his political rights for one year and confiscation of 50,000 yuan (US$7,352) in personal assets for “inciting secession.”

The source criticized Chinese authorities for citing Li’s case as an example of undermining national unity, saying the charge had been arbitrarily imposed and reflected Beijing’s lack of regard for human rights and rule of law compared with Western democracies.

Installing hidden cameras is “highly inadvisable, so the severest disciplinary action should be taken, and if the law requires them to suspend operation, then their operation should be suspended accordingly,” Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chung-liang said.

If audio or video is being recorded in consultation rooms where patients’ privacy is involved, the patient must be notified and give consent, Shih said, adding that the ministry established these regulations for protecting privacy in healthcare facilities.

Healthcare facilities that are found to have inappropriately installed recording equipment, resulting in the unauthorized disclosure of patient data could face a fine between NT$50,000 to NT$500,000, he said.

The Taiwanese ship moved in close to create wake interference, and broadcast messages to "forcefully expel the vessel, prohibiting it from conducting related activities."

Taiwan's coast guard said it continued to ‌shadow the Chinese ship until today, when it proceeded away from waters close to the nation.

"Chinese research vessels, in disregard of international law, have attempted to conduct illegal survey activities in our waters," it said, calling on China to stop such practices.

Taiwanese inventions are turning heads, and winning gold, in Paris.

Founded in 1901, Concours Lépine divides hundreds of entries across categories including daily life, artistic creation, health and inclusion, and transportation and industry, while also featuring a dedicated area for digital technologies.

“Taiwan has a strong presence at the Concours Lépine,” jury president Rene Lavergne said.

This year’s inventions incorporated sustainability, industrial applications and spatial design, Taiwanese delegation leader Hsu Chieh-chung said.
