Open up a gas water heater and it stops looking like an appliance.

It's a brass and copper machine. A heat exchanger, a gas valve, and a loom that ties the whole thing together. Every one of those joints gets assembled by hand before the case goes on and it becomes a plain white box again.

Most people never see the inside of the thing hanging on their wall. This is what it actually is.

Feeder bowls, laser marking, copper winding, and a rotor that comes out the other end.

There's something about watching parts become a product that doesn't get old. This one is a motor line for handheld blenders — the part of the appliance nobody thinks about until it stops working.

We spend a lot of days in rooms like this. It's the most useful part of the job.

Glass gets shaped at about 1100 degrees.

Not moulded, not pressed. It's heated until it goes soft, spun against a torch, and then cooled slowly on the annealing line so it doesn't crack.

The whole line is open flame. Most people picture factories as steel and conveyor belts — some of them look like this.

Everyone shows you the factory. Almost nobody shows you what happens after it.

Once your order is made, it goes to a consolidation warehouse — where it stops being yours alone and starts sharing a container with everyone else's freight. Every carton gets a destination card applied by hand. That card is the only reason it lands in the right city instead of someone else's yard.

Then it's stretch-wrapped and taped for a sea journey nobody photographs, and someone opens a carton at random — one you didn't choose — to check what actually got packed. Count, fill, seams, closures. The parts a product photo can't show you.

This is the part you're really paying a sourcing agent to stand in.

The sample you approved is probably not what ships.

Most samples are one-off and hand-made. That's not a scam — it's what a sample is for. You're confirming colour, placement, and size. Not the batch.

So don't stop there:

1. Ask to see the first few units off the mass production line, before the run continues.
2. Have an inspection sheet with every spec written down. A factory behaves differently when it knows you're checking.
3. Get those specs into the contract. If something goes wrong, that's what gives you the right to hold them to it.

The paperwork is the leverage.

Most buyers walk into a factory meeting and wait for the factory to impress them.

The buyers who get better pricing, better quality and better treatment do the opposite. They ask the questions nobody else is asking.

"What can you make?" and "how much does it cost?" are rehearsed. Every buyer asks them. The questions that actually change the dynamic are the ones that reveal how the factory operates: who is really running your order, what happens when something goes wrong, and whether they see you as a partner or a transaction.
