Postcards from Taiwan

Fly AirAsia and 交通部觀光署 Tourism took us on a tour on the Crown Coast, a tourism corridor that runs along Taiwan’s north coast. The name is literal: the coastline sits on top of the island like a crown. Everywhere we went was under an hour out. We hit a mountain village south of Taipei and a few spots in the city too!

A colorful fishing port, 20 million years of sea-carved rock, a retired coal line you pedal down, a brand new Zaha Hadid bridge, a waterfall with cable cars over it - learn more about these from my previous posts :)

Places featured (in order):
1. Heping Island GeoPark
2. Tamsui-Bali Scenic Ferry and Danjiang Bridge
3. Zhengbin Fishing Harbor and Bus Stop
4. Wulai Waterfall
5. Yongkang, Taipei
6. Wulai Log Cart
7. Tamsui-Bali Scenic Ferry
8. Waterfront Restaurant, Tamsui
9. Wulai Bridge and Wulai Old Street
10. Amba Hotel, Taipei

Wulai is a mountain village about an hour south of Taipei, in the valley where the Nanshi and Tonghou rivers meet, and it’s the northernmost settlement of the Atayal, one of Taiwan’s largest Indigenous groups. The name comes from ulay, the Atayal word for hot spring. The springs are still here, running up to 80°C, clear and odorless, which is why locals call them beauty springs.

Perfect for a day trip from Taipei! Save these for your trip to Wulai:
- Wulai Old Street and bridge
- Wulai Log Cart line
- Wulai Waterfall
- Yun Hsien Resort cable car

Wulai Log Cart is a tiny open-air train in the mountains south of Taipei, and the last working log cart line in Taiwan. It was built in 1928 to haul timber down the valley. For NT$50, you could get to the Wulai waterfall in minutes :)

Wulai is Atayal land, and the name comes from the Atayal word for hot spring. It’s only about an hour from Taipei!
