Someone told me this once and it completely changed how I parent.

When you are in the thick of it, the days feel so long. You are exhausted, touched out, and just waiting for bedtime. But the years are incredibly short.

One day, without any warning, they will ask to be put down. And you will not realize that it is the very last time you will ever carry them in your arms.

If you are reading this and your kids are still small enough to be held, this is your reminder. Ignore the mess in the kitchen. Let the laundry sit for one more day.

Hold them tightly tonight. Because this exact version of them will not be here tomorrow.

The hardest part of the day is when you need to cook dinner but your toddler is begging for the iPad. We have all been there.

Instead of fighting about screen time, I started setting up these ridiculously easy activities. They take maybe two minutes to prepare using things you already have in your kitchen or recycling bin.

The water pouring station is always a massive hit. It is messy, yes, but it buys me 45 minutes of complete silence to drink my coffee while it is still hot. It also builds their fine motor skills and independent play stamina.

The tape rescue is perfect for when you need them to stay in one spot. Just tape their favorite small toys to the floor or a baking sheet and let them peel it off.

Let’s be real for a second. There is nothing more triggering than a full blown toddler meltdown in the middle of the living room.

Our very first instinct as parents? We want to fix it immediately. We try to rationalize, we give long lectures, or we just want them to stop crying because, honestly, it is overwhelming for our own nervous system too.

But here is the hard truth. When our kids are in the middle of a massive emotion, their logical brain is completely offline. They literally cannot process your perfectly logical lecture.

They do not need our words. They need our CALM.

This is called coregulation. Before kids can ever learn how to self regulate, they have to borrow our nervous system. So the next time the screaming starts, try this shift:

1. Take a deep breath yourself (you have to regulate YOU first).
2. Get down on their eye level.
3. Do not force a hug or push them to talk. Just sit close, stay quiet, and be their safe harbor.

It feels so unnatural at first because we are wired to do something. But watching them slowly melt into your arms instead of fighting you is absolute magic.

Parenting is incredibly hard, and if no one has told you today, you are doing a really good job.
