For me, wild life photography is all about the colors. Landscapes, nature, animals and the light in Africa are so amazing that I always feel that I miss something when working in monochrome. On the other hand, when the subject is a zebra, it is ok to make an exception. And than again, when looking at this photo, I feel like doing this more often. What do you think?

Because of Covid and the travel restrictions, I wasn’t able to travel for a long time. But today I am grateful to be back in my beloved Africa. I spent a few days in the Ngrongoro Crater and it felt great to be back in this amazing nature. Ngorongoro is still my absolute favorite national park.

Today is International Chefs Day! 👨🏻‍🍳🥳

To be a great chef is all about passion, discipline and paying attention to details. A real cook is an artist!

On this special day we celebrate Axel Janssens, our flying chef in Tanzania.

In the book A Taste Of Tanzania he shares some of his recipes. These are often great classics of world cuisine, but mostly pimped with some African flair and other exotic touches.

In order of appearance:

Ratatouille du chef
Carrot cumin soup
Rack of lamb with Ngogwe & chocolate sauce
Baobab sorbet

Bon appetit!

The Serengeti: beauty as far as the eye can see, serenity central. That was our first impression when we entered these iconic grounds. Upon our arrival, the sky was a deep ink-blue full of clouds waiting to burst. In sharp contrast, in 50 shades of beige, the plains were gasping for water. This immense national park is named after the Maasai word “serengit,” which means: the land of endless plains. They truly captured the essence of this wonderful place.

Big cat, wild cat 🐆

We were over the moon when we saw this leopard. This was partly because although they're rather large and very well represented in numbers, their camouflage and nocturnal habits make this gorgeous big cat one of the hardest animals to spot.

Ode to the pride

Lions are the only big cats to live in groups. The prides are close family groups where everybody works together to defend territory and hunt.
The typical pride consists of ten to fifteen lions, with several adult females, their cubs and up to four males, better known as male lion coalitions. Some lion prides can be as large as 40 members!

Lionesses do the majority of the hunting. Lions, on the other hand, have the well-known reputation of just "lion" around in the shade. But we can't underestimate their role. A male lion's entire reason for existing is rather simple and comes down to:
Reproduce, defend their territory against pride takeovers and protect their offspring.

Hadza country

After crossing the Kidero Mountains, we reached this special destination: Yaeda Valley, the land of the world's last hunter-gatherers. They are living unchanged, just as their predecessors have for thousands of years.
We joined a group of Hadzabe men on their hunting trip. No rifle needed, they use bows and arrows. The expedition ended in zero kills. This is no supermarket where you pick your dinner from a rack. It is a rough and difficult existence. We could only have the most sincere and deep respect for the Hadzabe way of life.

'Meat & Greet' 🔥

Having a bush bbq with the Maasai tribe: we' ve been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. But in all honesty and all jokes aside, we felt incredibly honored to share a meal with them. Because it is a big deal. But there was a slight catch. We were also invited to be present at the ritual sacrifice of the goat that would end up on our plates. Of course, it is not pleasant to witness the killing of an animal. But the Maasai do this with so much respect and even tenderness for the little animal, that it left us musing about how disconnected we've become with the meat we eat.

Tarangire National Park is where significant numbers of elephants roam the lands. Surrounded by towering mountains and rolling hills in the distance, they walk the vast plains and stroll between the behemoth baobabs. This is the perfect, most beautiful place to observe those tender and very cunning creatures. If you don’t see them here, there probably aren’t any left.

Two tiny, ‘floofy’ lion cubs on a massive tree in the Ngorongoro. The rain creates an almost Vermeer-like painting effect.
