Proudly wearing my grandmother’s folk costume, one she made by hand together with her sister when they were both teenagers.
I’m proud to be Swedish.
We joke a lot about Swedes being very private, not knowing our neighbours, avoiding small talk, or not saying hi to strangers on streets. All of the above is certainly true, but the the core values of Sweden i still believe is grounded in compassion and wanting to take care of each other. It’s reflected in things like our healthcare and school systems, and in the idea that everyone should have an equal opportunity in life.
That’s why I get sad when it feels like we’re moving in the opposite direction. when conversations becomes more about closing doors than opening them.
I’m proud to be Swedish, but I’m proudest of the Sweden that looks after all its people, including those whose traditions, cultures, and heritage may differ from my own.
Let’s not forget that version of Sweden.
Happy birthday Sweden 🤍
