Filming and ethics...

This was the Circulated Photo of a vulture waiting for a starving Sudanese girl to die so it can feast on her.
It was taken by Kevin Carter, a prolific photojournalist, during the famine of 1993 in Sudan.
This photo later won Kevin the Pulitzer prize for an 'exceptional' caption.

However, Kevin later got depressed and took his own life four months after his world wide celebration as a skillful photographer.
He fell to depression. His depression began when during an interview (a phone-in programme), someone asked him what happened to the child. "I did not wait to see what happened after this shot as I had a flight to catch.... "And the person replied, "I put it to you that there were two vultures that day; one had a camera". This statement sank Kevin and as he constantly thought of the statement, he got depressed and ended his own life.

In whatever we do, let's consider humanity first.

Kevin Carter, may still have been alive today had it been he helped that little child.
To all you photographers that come to the African continent to take pictures of our people, our cultures, our struggles just for your own satisfaction and to gain followers, you need to stop. You need to respect and appreciate our cultures, our people and our struggles. We are not your project.

The AFRICAN FIXER GUILD

Production services are vital to guarantee the shooting will run smoothly, to outsource reliable crews & to partner with the best local suppliers, manage realistic intangibles such as securing drone permits, traffic jams or whatever unexpected circumstances production experience. In Africa many rules remain unwritten, many locations and informations can’t be Googled so you have to work with someone really understand the know how’s.

The African Fixer Guild mindset is based on the concern to value the African informal knowledge, the one inherited from oral transmission. The idea was that filming in Africa can't be done without African expertise. The African Fixer Guild believe natives are equipped with the most accurate key codes to conduct intercultural interactions within their country, codes which can't be learnt in business schools nor being absorbed by the expatriation... Natives are the compass that guide hundreds of production on the path of the most appropriate contents for their subjects. Producers find in experienced local film fixers a resourceful response to face their misconceptions, a crucial advantage to open doors in a continent of major culture of secrecy, a voice to speak their words when languages sounds deaf or unclear.

Therefore being a film fixer is being a tool of peace by making a dialogue possible. The African Fixer Guild is raised to make sure this priceless worth is recognised based on international rates, work conditions standards. We still have work keep ongoing, as a Team, as a Family, as a Guild.
