THE Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) is raising alarm over increasing cases of identity theft and data misuse.

Emmanuel Mkilia, the PDPC director general, made this observation at the weekend at a one day training session for media executives, communication officers and journalists attending a workshop on data protection and individual privacy.

Urging media practitioners to be responsible stewards of personal privacy in the information age, as the country deepens its shift into a digital economy.

He described personal privacy as a basic human right, demanding that journalists and media houses take up their responsibilities in protecting that right in a rapidly digitising world.

GEITA Region is setting the pace in the country’s efforts to reduce mercury use in small-scale gold mining.

Martin Shigela, the regional commissioner, made this affirmation at a press briefing here yesterday, profiling achievements in development projects in the region during the past four years.

He pointed at an increase in the number of modern, mercury-free processing plants from just 10 in 2021 to 23 expected by the end of this year, as part of a broader national strategy to safeguard public health and the environment from mercury-related harm.

Gold has for long been processed using rudimentary tools and mercury near riverbanks thus causing environmental damage and acute health risks, he stated, highlighting that as the country region has signed conventions to phase out the use of mercury, carrying out the transition is a priority area.

FIVE regions are set to build crop loss control centres, Agriculture Minister Hussein Bashe announced yesterday.

Launching a campaign to see crops in the field as wealth, held at Mtanana ward of Kongwa District, Dodoma Region, the minister said the initiative aims to address the chronic problem of crop spoilage after harvesting.

The move is intended to reduce post-harvest losses and strengthen agricultural value chains, as crop losses are a leading cause of farmer income woes across the country, he said.

The five centres will be strategically located in Dodoma, Kigoma, Mbeya, Mtwara and Ruvuma to serve various agricultural zones, where Dodoma centre is already completed and will soon begin wide ranging operations, he stated.
