We made it down.

We thought the celebration ended at the summit.

It didn’t.

Coming down Kilimanjaro we were lighter, louder, and way more dramatic. Boots kicking dust, jackets tied around waists, and someone started a song from camp. Some people want huts. Some people want a straight shot to the top. That is why we chose the 5 Day Marangu Route.

They call it the Coca-Cola Route because it is the only Kilimanjaro trekking route with dormitory huts all the way up. No tents to set up, no sleeping on the ground. Just warm beds, hot meals, and more energy for the climb.

Seven days. One mountain. A lifetime of stories.

We took the Machame Route up Kilimanjaro because we wanted the challenge and the views that make you stop mid-hike just to look. They call it the Whiskey Route for a reason. It is not easy, but it is beautiful.

Day one started in the rainforest with mist on the leaves and birds calling above us. By day three we were walking the Shira Plateau with the whole mountain in front of us. We chose the long way up Kilimanjaro, and it was the best decision we ever made.

Eight days on the Lemosho Route gave us time to breathe, to adjust, and to fall in love with every side of the mountain. We started in the rainforest with monkeys in the trees, crossed the Shira Plateau with views that looked endless, and walked the Western Breach with the sky turning pink above us.
