Our future depends on the ocean.

Zanzibar’s blue economy is expanding, but it can only grow if the marine environment stays healthy. Fisheries, aquaculture, and marine tourism all rely on strong coastal ecosystems.

When the ocean is protected, communities benefit.
When it is overused, the losses affect everyone.

A sustainable approach is the path to long-term progress.

The Cathedral Built on a History of Enslaved People. Beneath the Anglican Cathedral in Stone Town, there are underground slave chambers that were used during the slave trade.

These chambers remain preserved today, offering a direct look into one of the darkest periods in Zanzibar’s history.

They remind us of the people who were taken, the conditions they faced, and the importance of remembering this part of the island’s past.

What if Zanzibar’s real tourism strength is found in its stories?

Many people visit for the beaches and historic sites, but the island also carries a deep storytelling culture. Through taarab, poetry, and Swahili literature, Zanzibar has preserved memories, ideas, and identity across generations.

Zanzibar’s future in tourism may rely not only on its places, but the stories that continue to shape the island.

State-owned firms perform better when their leaders can make real decisions.

Many state-owned enterprises in Tanzania are still burdened by heavy bureaucracy. Board decisions, hiring, procurement, and pay must be approved by external government bodies.

To compete, these firms need more autonomy: empower their boards and management, let them hire without long delays, and allow decision-making to rest with those who are accountable.

If we trust them, we can see better performance, faster innovation, and stronger public enterprises.

Zanzibar still builds dhows the same way it did centuries ago. The island has one of the oldest surviving traditions of hand-built wooden dhows.
Many of these vessels are still crafted by local shipbuilders using skills passed down through generations.
They continue to sail along the coast today, carrying people, goods, and a long history of maritime culture.

Hotels, lodges, and guesthouses must separate their waste into categories such as organic, plastic, glass, paper, and hazardous materials.
This system helps reduce pollution, protects natural spaces, and supports recycling efforts across the islands.
It is a daily operational practice meant to keep Zanzibar cleaner and more sustainable for the long term.

Microfinance was designed to help small business owners grow.
But when high interest rates and rigid terms come in, does it still help or just add pressure?

They can crack coconuts with their claws. And they’re native to Zanzibar’s islands.

Coconut crabs, the world’s largest land-living arthropods. Rare, elusive, and often misunderstood, these creatures are part of Zanzibar’s unique natural identity that few people ever get to see.

How many other wonders of Zanzibar do we overlook because they don’t make it to postcards?

We call it a productivity booster, but caffeine is the world’s most consumed psychoactive substance.

It keeps us alert, helps us meet deadlines, and powers long workdays. But for many, it’s no longer a choice, it’s a dependency.

Is caffeine improving how we work, or just helping us survive exhaustion?
