The Cathedral Built on a History of Enslaved People. Beneath the Anglican Cathedral in Stone Town, there are underground slave chambers that were used during the slave trade.

These chambers remain preserved today, offering a direct look into one of the darkest periods in Zanzibar’s history.

They remind us of the people who were taken, the conditions they faced, and the importance of remembering this part of the island’s past.
