Danakil Depression, Ethiopia
Though this may look like some sort of alien landscape, this photo actually shows what happens at the triple junction of three tectonic plates. The Danakil Depression in Ethiopia is known as the hottest place on the planet and has the lava lakes, volcanoes, and acidic springs to prove it. Each natural feature in this area is so visually striking that even with the soaring temperatures, it still attracts tour groups, ideally from September to May. It’s possible to access the depression at other times of the year but not recommended simply because it is just that hot.
