In the process of development, the offspring of newts go through several metamorphoses. The eggs hatch into larvae, which, 3-4 months after that, get out on land, if conditions allow it, and there they gradually lose their gills.
If the larvae of these animals develop in a reservoir with steep banks, where it is impossible to get out onto land, they continue to lead an aquatic lifestyle. An interesting fact: in this case, their gills are not lost, but are preserved in their adult form.
Neighboring with newts is very useful for us humans. They eat mosquitoes and other harmful insects , and in such significant quantities that they significantly reduce the number of their population in their habitats.
These creatures have powerful regenerative abilities. In case of danger, they can, like lizards , drop their tail, and then grow a new one. It also happens that the old tail is not completely discarded, and grows again, but the new one still begins to grow. The result is a two-tailed newt. By the way, they can regrow even lost limbs and some internal organs.
Most of the newts become more visible during the mating season, however, only males. In order to attract the attention of the female, they not only grow crests, but also change color to a brighter one, although this is risky - in this form it is easier for them to accidentally attract the attention of some predator.

When breeding, the females of these amazing creatures always wrap the eggs in the leaves of aquatic plants suitable for this purpose. This protects them both from predators and from sunlight, which can harm the caviar if it is hidden in shallow water.
Tritons are not afraid of the cold, they hibernate in the winter, and in a variety of conditions - under ice in a pond, for example, or under some kind of snag in the forest. But, being cold-blooded creatures, when the temperature drops, they lose their mobility, and if a sharp cold snap finds them in the wrong place, they can easily fall asleep right there, eventually becoming a victim of some predator.
The false newts common in North America are actually lungless salamanders. These amazing animals really don't have lungs! Once upon a time, their ancestors came out of the water onto land, and in the course of evolution they had lungs, but then they returned to the aquatic environment again, getting rid of them. When they decided to move to land for the second time, their lungs did not evolve again, so the false newts learned to breathe atmospheric air with the entire surface of the skin.
All species of these creatures, regardless of where they live, are either twilight or nocturnal, and during the day they hide in shelters. There can be only one exception here - when during the breeding season they start migrating, they can move even during the day.
Newts of most species molt from time to time, and some of them can molt several times during one warm season. Often, immediately after molting, they eat their own old skin so that the nutrients contained in it are not wasted.

Strictly speaking, in biology there is no such definition as a triton. This group includes different representatives of tailed amphibians , which at the same time belong to different families. However, despite the biological differences, there are also similarities between them.
The most widely known newts, which scientists refer to the family of real salamanders. These are quite large animals that can grow up to twenty centimeters in length! In Russia, by the way, they are also found.
These amphibians have one interesting feature: some of their species can lead both an almost completely aquatic and almost completely terrestrial lifestyle. The difference is huge, and it often appears within separate populations, even if these animals belong to the same species.
If you see a crest on the back of a newt, it means that you have a male in front of you, since females do not have a crest. However, males also do not wear it all the time, they grow it only in the spring, by the beginning of the breeding season, and then it gradually disappears.
All newts (which are salamanders) are affected by a chromosomal abnormality. Because of this, exactly 50% of their offspring always die at the embryonic stage. However, this does not prevent them from reproducing, since females lay quite a lot of caviar.
