The EU remains committed to completely phasing out Russian gas supplies, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated.

“I am very clear in my commitment to a gradual phase-out of Russian gas… it is an absolute necessity. We have made progress, but we always see, of course, that there are loopholes where we have to be careful and where we have to work,” she told reporters in Brussels.

Australia donates EUR 6M to Ukraine Energy Support Fund

The Australian government has transferred EUR 6 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.

This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

"Australia has contributed an additional EUR 6 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. The Australian government's funds will be distributed to key urgent needs of the Ukrainian energy sector,"
the statement says.

Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace plans to produce missiles for NASAMS air defense systems in Ukraine, the company’s president, Eirik Lee, told Euractiv.

“We are currently establishing a company in Ukraine. We are in close talks with representatives of Ukrainian industry about creating a joint venture. The first priority is to increase missile production for our air defense system in Ukraine using Ukrainian technology,” Lee said.

According to him, the plan involves mass production of missiles and the possibility of establishing joint ventures with Ukraine within a few months.

“In the long term, when the war is over, Ukraine could become part of the supply chain for missiles for air defense systems. There is a lot of innovation happening in Ukraine right now, and we want to be part of it. It is important for us to be there,” he added.

French Prime Minister François Bayrou has called for the creation of a European defense union similar to NATO but without the participation of the United States.

Bayrou stated this in an interview with Le Figaro. He emphasized that the current situation should serve as a lesson for those “who believed that the security of Europe could be guaranteed by the United States.”

“France, since the time of General Charles de Gaulle, was right to consider independence as the only guarantee of security, including for Europe,” Bayrou said.

He also suggested that defense spending should be excluded from European budget deficit rules.

According to the draft French budget for 2025, military spending will increase by over €3 billion to €50.5 billion (2% of GDP). Since 2017, France has been systematically increasing its defense budget, aiming to double it by 2030 to €67.4 billion.
