Having studied the genome of this fungus, scientists have found that it can decompose lignin (a substance that characterizes the stiff walls of plant cells) in the wood of trees, which allows it to parasitize them so successfully. Dark threads of dark honey agaric (rhizomorphs), having penetrated under the bark of trees, go under it through young layers of trunks (sapwood) for tens of meters and thus the fungus receives nutrients from plants. Over time, trees affected by the parasitic fungus die.

The vast majority of the mass of the dark honey agaric and other species from its genus lies underground and is not visible to humans. Only small groups, resembling ordinary mushrooms and serving for reproduction, can be seen above the surface. Currently, these largest organisms in the world pose a serious threat to forests, mainly coniferous ones, causing outwardly unreasonable death of trees.

Growing in the Maloor Forest Reserve in the US state of Oregon , the dark honey agaric (Armillaria ostoyae) is recognized as the largest living creature on the planet. This giant mushroom covers an area of ​​910 hectares and weighs about 35,000 tons , and its age is estimated at about 8,000 years.

Most of it is hidden from view and is underground in the form of a massive litter of tendril-like white mycelia (mycelia) - the fungal equivalent of roots. The fungus entangles tree roots, causing the general death of trees, and only occasionally breaks through the soil in the form of harmless small placers of golden fungi.
