Can mining be "green"? Solutions and possible alternatives
📝There are more and more global discussions about the risks and opportunities connected with lithium, a critical material for the green transition. Ukraine, home to one of Europe’s largest lithium reserves at the Polokhivske deposit, faces both enormous potential and serious challenges.
Its only licensed operator, UkrLithiumMining, has been criticized for murky permits, environmental concerns, and unclear processing technologies. Scientists warn that without transparency and innovation, extraction could harm public health and ecosystems♻️
This research carried out by Рубрика \ Rubryka - Solutions from Ukraine (Ukraine), and Zeitenspiegel Reportagen (Germany) analyzes which social and institutional initiatives in Ukraine and abroad can help create safe, sustainable frameworks for lithium use and what their limitations are.
For example, while Ukraine has barely discussed alternatives like recycling, Germany is already putting battery reuse and recycling into practice, recovering valuable raw materials and reducing waste. In the US and Japan, lithium and other minerals are successfully extracted from produced waters, turning toxic byproducts into industrial resources.
To succeed, Ukraine must adopt transparent governance, invest in innovation, and align with EU standards. Only then can it unlock its lithium potential without sacrificing public health and the environment.
