Turmeric is a relative of ginger and one of the main ingredients in Indian cuisine. The curcumin contained in the root of this plant, which gives the spice its characteristic yellow color, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This substance also prevents the development of heart disease, cancer, depression and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Although the metabolic effects of turmeric have only been studied in animals, researchers suggest that it promotes fat burning by reducing levels of insulin resistance, one of the important factors in weight gain. Turmeric (read also: "5 reasons why your skin will love turmeric") goes well with soups, rice and stews.
