It is with broken hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, popularly known as Diogo Jota, a beloved footballer at Liverpool fc, husband, father, and role model, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, on the early morning of July 3, 2025. At only 28 years old.
The devastating incident occurred when Diogo and his brother, André Silva also a professional footballer were involved in a fatal crash while traveling together. According to local authorities, their Lamborghini veered off the road, overturned, and caught fire. Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations suggest that a suspected tire failure while overtaking may have caused the accident.
This unimaginable loss has sent shockwaves through the football world and beyond. Diogo Jota was not only a star on the pitch but a kind, passionate, and deeply humble human being. He had recently celebrated a milestone in his personal life, marrying his long-time partner Rute Cardoso just days before the tragedy. The couple shared three young children and a bright future ahead now tragically cut short.
Since joining Liverpool FC in 2020, Jota had become an integral part of the club’s attacking force, known for his sharp instincts, creativity, and relentless energy. He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and helped lead Liverpool to multiple trophies, including the Premier League title, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup. For his country, he earned 49 international caps for Portugal, contributing to their historic UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025.
The football community stands still today. Flags fly at half-mast. Matches begin in silence. Fans leave flowers, jerseys, and messages outside Anfield and Estádio do Dragão, where he began his journey. It’s a reminder that the game isn’t just about goals or wins, but about the people who play it and Diogo Jota was one of the finest.
🕯 Rest in Peace, Diogo Jota
