The Arua City Electoral Commission has confirmed the nomination of 45 candidates for the positions of City Mayor and councillors ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

According to Returning Officer Ezale Osman, the ruling NRM Party leads with 18 candidates, followed by 20 independents, while the Democratic Party (DP) has 4. The NUP, FDC, and PFF each presented 1 candidate, while the ANT had none.

For the Arua City Mayoral seat, three candidates will contest—one from NRM, one on the DP ticket, and one Independent.

The largest competition is in the Directly Elected Councillor positions, where 14 candidates are vying in each category.

Meanwhile, four candidates have already gone through unopposed under special interest groups. They are: Hope Perry Nyadri, Female Youth Councillor, Magyezi Gift, Male Youth Councillor, Acia Marino, Male Elder Representative and former District Education Officer of Arua, The Female Workers’ Representative

Three people have been electrocuted and one injured after a crusade tent they were shifting touched a high-voltage power line in Bushenyi District on Friday.

The tragedy occurred at Kashenyi Market Place, Kiruhura Village, Ryeishe Parish, Ibaare Sub-county, during a crusade organized by Rock Ministries Church.

Koboko District LC5 Chairperson, Mambo Asrafu, has pledged to enhance service delivery in the sectors of health, education, social services and security.

Mambo made the remarks shortly after his nomination to contest for the same position in the upcoming 2025/2026 general elections.

The Koboko District Returning Officer, Kisarale Raymond, confirmed that Mambo, who is unopposed, is among over 40 candidates nominated for various positions within the district.

Zombo District LC5 Chairperson, James Oruna Oyullu, has sailed through unopposed in the three-day nomination exercise conducted by Electoral Commission Uganda for local government positions.

Oyullu was declared unopposed by Zombo District Returning Officer, Emmanuel Ogwang, after one of the aspirants, Chothembo, failed to meet all the nomination requirements.

He is now seeking a second term in office, having been elected to the position during the 2021 general elections.

The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has launched the Social Cash Transfer for Elderly Refugees (SCTER), a three-year pilot program in West Nile region.

The initiative targets refugees aged 80 years and above who are settled in Bidibidi (Yumbe District) and Lobule (Koboko District).
It is being implemented in partnership with Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), with support from the Government of Ireland.

Under the program, beneficiaries receive a monthly stipend of 25,000 shillings, which is accumulated and disbursed quarterly at 75,000 shillings through Post Bank Uganda.

More than 500 children in West Nile are set to benefit from the Jewel Michael Foundation for Education campaign, an initiative being launched today in Adjumani District.

The launch is being graced by several dignitaries, including the Senior Presidential Advisor on Defence and Security, Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho a.k.a. Salim Saleh - Chief Guest.
Also in attendance are Members of Parliament from the West Nile, educationists, religious and cultural leaders among others.

The event, which highlights educational challenges faced in the region like child marriage and high drop out, is spearheaded by Jewel Michael, 2nd Runner-Up in the Miss Teens Universe 2024/2025 pageant held in India.
